There is so much happening. Big seismic movements for change and justice and anger at further inequalities being perpetuated.
The Government's Commission on Race and Ethnic disparities
which 'minimises and at times denies
' that there is institutional racism in this country
Outrage, both at the killing of Sarah Everard
, the way a vigil for her was policed
, who was white and the lack of outrage for the killing last summer of Nicole Smallman and Bibaa Henry, two sisters who were black
The racially motivated, hate crime shooting of 8 people, largely women and Asian
, in Atlanta, Georgia
The ongoing murder trial of George Floyd
in the US, and the restimulation of racial trauma that reliving all parts of this murder brings about.
The publication of Emma Dabiri's incisive and deeply practical essay What white people can do next
It's to this backdrop that tonight at 8-10pm UK time, i am honoured to be part of a discussion about
Backing BIPOC in the NVC community
. You can still sign up to be listen in live to the discussion or to receive the recording afterwards.
POC 4 NVC is a wonderful organisation for people of colour who practice, innovate, and share Nonviolence and Nonviolent Communication (NVC) as a powerful way to respond to and transform racism, privilege and oppression at the individual and systemic levels.
This is a fundraiser for POC 4 NVC, so please do contribute if you can. If you are POC and you have been upset, grieved or frustrated by what happens in an NVC space, POC 4 NVC has a Peer Support space
you can lean into.
As for me, I am excited to be learning and growing, and also slightly daunted by fears of not being good enough in the live conversation, or of having some aspect of my cluenessness about how to proceed in the midst of white supremacy exposed.
I see institutional racism or white supremacy is when a whole series of forces come together which deny People of colour power and opportunities in society. This is the water we are swimming in and I trust that the more we talk about this, the more we can learn and do things differently.
