Winter on the Farm: Christmas Open House & Holiday Gift Ideas
We're finally wrapping up our harvest, adjusting to the shorter daylight hours, and winding down into a slower pace here at Kilgus Farmstead. Our animals are tucked into their cozy barns and while we still have our daily milking, feeding, and bottling chores, winter is typically a bit quieter around here. Without all the outdoor demands we have more time for our families, which we certainly appreciate and value dearly.  With the holidays coming soon, this timing is just right!

After our own family Thanksgiving dinner, we're planning to kick off the holiday season with our annual Kilgus Farmstead Christmas Open House at our Country Store on Saturday, November 26th from 10am-2pm. Come on in to enjoy the festivities and sample some delicious meat and cheese, Beef House rolls and specialty butters, and other goodies! We will have several in-store specials including $2 off our much sought-after porterhouse steaks, and $1 off all soaps and lotions. We will also have gift baskets and meat boxes available for purchase or special order. Read on to learn more about these holiday gift ideas from Kilgus Farmstead, and Happy Holidays to you and yours!

Customer Spotlight

Eli's Coffee Shop: Coffee with Heart
‘Tis the season to pause, reflect, and remember the things that we are grateful for.  And when it comes to our business, our loyal customers come to mind first.  We appreciate all of the customers who support us and make this business possible; we couldn't do it without you!
To demonstrate our appreciation, we thought we'd kick off our Customer Spotlight series. We have many mutually beneficial relationships with customers throughout the state; they are your local grocery stores, natural foods stores or coops, delis, restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, and catering services.  Our partnerships result in high quality foods and beverages for your enjoyment and nourishment.
We are delighted to feature Eli's Coffee Shop, a family-owned business that values community, connection, and high quality, delicious coffee and food.  Eli’s sources local products whenever possible, and Kilgus Farmstead milk is their choice for local milk. You will find our milk in their rich and creamy specialty coffee drinks (options include our Whole or Skim milk), and our heavy whipping cream is part of what makes their scones so delicious.
Eli's has grown over the years to include two locations: Morton and Tremont (both south of Peoria), and each venue is unique, thoughtfully-selected, and possesses rich historical heritage.  The business has also expanded to include catering services, offering a variety of appetizers, wraps, and baked goods for large or small local events.
While Eli’s is known for its delicious baked goods and coffee, it is also a community gathering place where slowing down, connection, and conversation are invited and encouraged.  Owner Rachel Berchtold is passionate and enthusiastic about her work, and this includes not only providing high quality food and beverages, but also cultivating an environment that fosters community and connection.
As such, Eli’s gives back to the community in a variety of ways, including donating $1 from each specialty drink of the month sold and Donation Days, wherein a local organization or school group camps out at Eli’s to raise awareness of their need, and in return receives 10% of the proceeds of all sales that day.

If you live in the Peoria area, or just happen to be passing through, stop in at Eli’s Coffee Shop to savor something delicious and support two local family-owned businesses!

Annual One Day, One Dollar Milk Sale

Another way that we show our customer appreciation is through our annual One Day, One Dollar milk sale at the Kilgus Farmstead Country Store.  It's just what it sounds like: come in to the store (located 1 mile south of Fairbury, Illinois on 1st street) between 8am - 2pm on Friday, December 23rd, and you can buy a gallon of milk for one dollar!  In fact, you can even buy up to ten (ten gallon maximum per customer). The sale will last through 2pm or as long as supplies last.  If you're planning to come later in the day, you may want to call first (815-692-6080).

If our milk supply allows it, we may also extend the sale to a second day on Saturday, December 31st.  Check our Facebook page for an announcement during the week between Christmas and New Years.
Meet the Kilgus Family
Today we also begin a series to introduce you to the Kilgus family -- to give you a better sense of the people behind the Kilgus Farmstead products you love.  We start today at the beginning, with the farm's founders: Duane and Arlene Kilgus (also known as Grandpa & Grandma Kilgus).

In the late 1950’s Duane and Arlene Kilgus bought the Kilgus Farmstead land where the dairy now sits, from Duane’s father, Herman Kilgus.  Duane and Arlene began raising Holstein cows, initiating a legacy that would evolve into what is now a fourth generation family farm.  Over the years the herd flourished and multiplied, just like their family.

After raising seven children on the farm, they are now happily retired and live in town.  However, they continue their life’s work at Kilgus Farmstead to this day, giving tours, assisting customers at the store, and helping to prepare orders for delivery.
