What's Happening on the Farm?

Spring is in the air at Kilgus Farmstead!  Our Jersey cows are delighted to return to the pasture to graze on delicious early spring grasses and our Berkshire hogs are happily soaking up lots of sunshine.  Our Boer goat does are in full kidding mode and there are new baby goats everywhere!  We even witnessed the birth of quadruplet kids this spring – a special event given that twins or triplets are far more common.

The birds are also chirping, although this includes blackbirds that aren’t so welcome (as they bother the cows and get into their feed).  We’re experimenting with some electronic “squawkers” that we’ve installed to sound like predators & scare the blackbirds away; so far it seems to be working!

We are also preparing for spring planting, mowing grass, and gearing up for a new season of visitors on the farm.  Trees are budding and it won’t be long before the tulips all over the farm are blooming.  We hope you’ll visit soon to see for yourself!

Farmstead Tours

We are now taking reservations for Spring Farmstead Tours!
Our tours include meeting all the types of animals that live on the farm, visiting the barn and the milking parlor, and learning about our creamery and milk-bottling while viewing the operation through the window in our country store.   Tours last roughly an hour (or a little longer), cost $4 per person, and require a reservation.   To make a reservation, contact us at info@kilgusfarmstead.com. Good Food Festival

Kilgus Farmstead just wrapped up another great appearance at the Good Food Festival in Chicago, where we’ve been showcasing our products for chefs and consumers alike for 5 years in a row.  This event is an incredible celebration of good local food that draws thousands of consumers and buyers.  We handed out samples of all our milk products and of our yummy pulled pork and goat to over 500 people on Saturday alone!

This year, Kilgus Farmstead was honored to be included in one of the Chefs at Play cooking demos that paired local farmers with some of Chicago’s finest chefs.   Award-winning pastry chef Sandra Holl of the well-known Chicago bakery, Floriole, was one of four chefs featured, and of 150 talented farmers, she chose Kilgus Farmstead to be her partner.  What an honor!
