Step-by-Step Wet Pond Construction

Both Wet and Dry ponds control runoff and filter sediment. Since Wet Ponds are designed to retain water permanently, design and construction is more complex. In areas where the water table is high, Wet Ponds may be specified because they remove more nutrients. Follow the construction of this Tidewater pond to learn how.

After the basin was dug and graded, the contractor installed 44,000 square feet of 50 Mil PVC Liner. PVC liners (also available in 20, 30, 40 and 60 mil) are custom manufactured in panels that suit the contractor's needs. This site required 3 unique sizes and a total of 11 panels. The panels were seamed together using an adhesive

This liner creates impermeable barrier that will prevent contamination of the groundwater system. For additional protection, a layer of 8oz nonwoven fabric was installed on top of the liner. The geotextile cushions and protects the PVC from puncture. If the liner were to be damaged, contaminants would seep through and the liner would be compromised.

A perimeter of 4oz drainage fabric and stone was then installed around the pond. This barrier is designed to slow sheet flow runoff and will be the top point of water rise. 9 PVC Coated Gabion Baskets were then installed at the inlets. These rock-filled wire baskets are the pond's forebays. Forebays collect sediment, slow the velocity of water and make maintenance easier.

Single Net Straw was installed on the pond's embankments to stabilize the slopes. Following this install, the soil area was planted with wetland plants that are specified for wet ponds to absorb excess nutrients.
