To new years and new ventures...

Hi everyone,

A little round-up of what's been going on so far this year...

I hope the first month of 2017 has brought some joy and new beginnings... some happiness and ventures alongside the world difficulties and insecurities. It's so hard to concentrate and create, (and feel guilt-free, at times, when creating), when there are so many deeply concerning events taking place, but it's crucial, a way to celebrate the beauty and light that is always here and always stronger...and to quote writer, poet and activist Alice Walker, ' whenever you are creating beauty around you, you are restoring your own soul'. Yes! And this restoring and joy spreads...

It would be lovely to hear about any new ventures you may have started/ or soon to be starting this year... something to celebrate? :)

  • Now... to Angel budgies and commissions...

I recently completed a commission for a wonderful friend, of her cheeky, full-of-character budgie called Angel. It was a joy to spend a few days creating this, and I only wish I could meet Angel in budgie-person, but unfortunately she lives in New Zealand, so I worked from a number of photographs and from learning a little more about her character, from my friend Ally, in order to represent her as best I could. I'm so pleased that Ally is happy with the felting! and I've just heard that she has arrived safely in NZ, approx 11,686 miles away... having been rolled carefully in tissue paper in a postal tube.x

Angel - from photo to felting to needle-punch sketch to Warhol inspired 'Pink Cow wallpaper'...

I'm excited about taking commissions for pets, or favourite landscapes, and was wondering whether any subscribers would like a completely unique felting of their much loved pet - ideally cats or birds, goats, sheep...or insects?!

Or perhaps the pet of a friend, for a special, loving gift?
A felting is also a wonderful memorial for past beloved pets.

I have felted a Beagle, George, and he came out well, and the owner was very happy, however, I do feel happier felting cats and other animals... Alternatively I'm happy to felt a beloved dog in a landscape...!:-) I don't really enjoy creating face-on 'pet portraits', but I know there are many other felt artists who do these.

Here are some examples... George the Beagle was approx 45 x 40 cms and the cats, Ginger and Silver, a little smaller.

If you're interested, please contact me via my website and we can discuss your pet and also designs and prices - usually approx £100 (UK sterling) + but really depending on size, framing etc...

  • A little Italian/Cornish film-making!
Another success so far for the business has been to take part in a short film by Italian filmmaker, Sara Pozzoli, who saw my feltings in an exhibition last Summer and asked if I'd like to feature in her film for Italian national TV about Penzance (where I live in Cornwall) and the surrounding area. I ignored my usual fears and said Yes! and am so glad I did and am so thankful that Sara asked me.
We had a wonderful morning.  New blog post here :-)

  • Folt Bolt shop - shipping tweaks ...and all sorted!
Another positive step has been the final tweaks to my FoltBolt online shop. This is also new for the FoltBolt creator, Kriszta Kemeny, and it looks wonderful  - there are some brilliant artists and artisans showcased there, as there are every day on the FoltBolt FB page and website.
The language can be changed when viewing the online shop and also you can view in your own currency. At checkout, transactions are made via Paypal, in US dollars. I have made two lovely sales so far and feedback has shown that the procedure is quick and easy :-)

Future exciting projects are: (many the same as last time!)
  • Classes for sheep-making (with a pipe-cleaner armature)
  • Felt painting classes
  • Creating some Time-lapse videos!
  • Looking into future art therapy and well-being classes
  • Attending a course on business, starting in February - all help in this area gratefully received!

I'd love to hear from you with any comments - felting, pets, or on the creative process in general!
I'll post this newsletter on my website blog so please do leave any comments if you wish :-)

Best wishes for an inspiring, soul-restoring and creative February!
