First joint picnic of the Asian Commission of the Diocese of California

On Sunday, July 24, the Asian Commission of the Episcopal Diocese of California (ACDC) organized a joint retreat/worship picnic held at the Westborough Park in South San Francisco, under the  prodigious collaborative efforts of ACDC co-chairs the Rev. Merry Chan-Ong and the Rev. Leonard Oakes. The event was met with praise and delight with over 100 people in attendance from members of Christ Church (Sei Ko Kai), San Francisco; Incarnation, San Francisco; St. James, San Francisco; Holy Child and St. Martin, Daly City; St. Ambrose, Foster City; True Sunshine, San Francisco; Our Savior, Oakland; and seminarians from CDSP.
Episcopal churches go for Pokémon Go

[Episcopal News Service | July 22] Pokémon Go is a game, but Christie Tugend is ready to nominate it for a Nobel Peace Prize. “In the middle of these contentious times, people are coming out of their houses,” said Tugend, parish administrator for Christ Church, Coronado, in the Diocese of San Diego. “They’re walking their neighborhoods and public places, gathering together at all times of the day, and interacting with one another with kind and friendly words and smiles on their faces." [...] “When is the last time we have had a literal flood of people onto our parish grounds?” asked the Rev. Mark A. Spaulding, rector of Holy Cross Episcopal Church, Castro Valley, in the Diocese of California. “How shall we respond? ‘Keep them out. Don’t step on the daisies?’ Or, ‘Welcome, we are glad you are here! Here is a chair to make it more comfortable for you.’"

VIDEO: On policing, reconciliation, black lives, and the church’s role

[Episcopal News Service | July 29] The Rev. Gayle Fisher-Stewart spent 20 years working as a police officer for the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police Department. She joined the department in 1972, four years after riots destroyed parts of the city following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. At the time African-Americans made of 70 percent of the people living in the nation’s capital; at the same time, the police department was overwhelmingly white. Fisher-Stewart’s decision to join the police force baffled friends and family. The department had a bad reputation, she said, and “my friends weren’t happy because some of them had had negative interactions with police here in D.C.”

Lay pastoral care at Equipping the Beloved Community event at St. Stephen’s, Orinda

On Saturday August 27, St. Stephen’s, Orinda will be your host for a full day of workshops for lay and ordained people engaged in pastoral ministries ranging from Eucharistic visiting to Stephen Ministry to care for seniors with dementia. In addition, look for stewardship workshops with Davey Gerhard teaching an introduction to pledge campaigns and Caroline McCall leading Appreciative Inquiry, a foundational skill for experienced stewards. Other workshops include ministry with youth and music with children, Eucharistic Ministry, and Ed Bacon — a progressive spokesperson on issues of faith and justice, and recently retired as rector of All Saints, Pasadena — will deliver the keynote address address on the theme of Common/Wealth: "Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul… there was not a needy person among them,” Lunch, worship, and a chance to meet and enjoy Episcopalians from neighboring congregations rounds out the day. Procession and High Mass at Advent of Christ the King, San Francisco

Procession and High Mass will be offered at Advent of Christ the King, San Francisco, on Monday August 15 at 6:30 p.m. for the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady. The Rev. Alex Martin will celebrate and the Rev. Paul Allick will preach. The music will be led by Schola Adventus, directed by Dr. Paul Ellison. It will include Missa Assumpta est Maria by Palestrina, Ave Maria by Parsons, and Hymn for the Dormition of the Virgin by Taverner. A festive reception will follow in Lathrop Hall.

Music and scripture: Presented by John Prescott

Join this series to explore Scripture passages which have inspired Western classical music composers. Lamentations: raw emotion and beautiful poetry brought forth unparalleled musical creativity; Gospel passion narratives: composers from the Middle Ages to today re-open the drama of the crucifixion and death of Jesus; Song of Solomon: overflowing images from nature and human physical love evoke musical intensity. Guided listening to musical recordings will provide insight to how music helps open the scriptures. John Prescott holds a Ph.D. in musicology from U.C. Berkeley, is a spiritual director, an Episcopalian, and a Third Order Franciscan. He has lead retreats on music and spirituality since 2002.

‘Women who knew Jesus’ — a Fall retreat with Holy Family, Half Moon Bay

Presented by the Rev. Dr. Bonnie Ring, author of the book by the same title. The women who encountered Jesus were forever changed by their experiences. Holy Family, Half Moon Bay, invites you to spend two Saturdays with some of these women and let them inspire and nourish you. By allowing these Biblical women to speak with their own voices, participants will discover their similarities to the women, uncover the richness of their own stories, and deepen their relationship with Jesus. Each day’s schedule includes the retelling of several Gospel accounts of these women’s encounters with Jesus, followed by guided meditations, dyad and small group discussion, time for quiet reflection, journaling, and worship. Join the retreat at the beautiful campus of Holy Family, located in lovely Half Moon Bay on the coastside. Registration covers materials, continental breakfast, and lunch both days. Copies of the book Women who knew Jesus will be available for purchase on retreat days ($25 for hardback; $19 for paperback).

Vacation bible school and summer camp at St. Luke’s, San Francisco

Open to youths from 3rd through the 8th grade, this year's theme is Songs & Spirituals reflecting the Gospel message. Saturday evening will include a roof-top camp out under the stars with movie, popcorn, and campfire stories. The camp will conclude on Sunday with breakfast and singing at the 10 a.m. service.
