July 2016

Welcome to the July edition of 'FOCUS' for 2016.  With our annual conference fast approaching we have been busy preparing our speakers and planning for the new year which is anticipated to be filled with exciting events and offers.

President’s Message

As part of the Memorandum of Understanding between LGAT and LG Professionals Tas, I was invited to present at LGAT’s General Meeting which was held in Hobart on 20 July. It was the first time LG Professionals has had the opportunity to present at this forum.  With Mayors, elected members and Council officers present, I took the opportunity to provide an overview of our organisation’s goals, member services, governance structure and to highlight significant achievements at a State and National level.

I was also privileged to present a certificate at the LGAT conference dinner to retiring Meander Valley Council General Manager, Greg Preece, recognising 15 years of membership with our organisation.  It was wonderful to be able to recognise Greg and his contribution to LG Professionals in the presence of his peers.  I take this opportunity to wish Greg and wife Jude all the very best for his upcoming retirement after a long and distinguished career in Local Government.

Greg Preece - 15 years of membership

By now, members will have received notification of the 2016 elections.  This year we have 2 vacancies, each for a 3 year period.    I have found my experience of being a Board member extremely invaluable, both professionally and personally and I would certainly encourage any member who has an interest in representing the organisation at the Board level, to please consider putting your name forward. Further information can be sourced from our Executive Officer.  Nominations close on 12 August

Karen Hampton
Executive Officer Message

Hi All,

Welcome to another edition of FOCUS,  I have been very busy with the preparation of our Annual Conference  and the (re)establishment of our Special Interest Groups since our last newsletter.

During my short time here so far and having spoken with both current and previous members, I have realised that being a member of LG Professionals Tasmania means more than just having access to conferences, events and professional development activities, its about being part of an active and growing organisation, building lifelong friendships and networks and being proud to be part of the LG Professionals brand.

Upon this reflection, I aim to do my best to deliver the quality of services our members required and as such, there are some very exciting things in store for the 2016/2017 financial year including a new website to be launched in August, joint projects with the Local Government Association of Tasmania and a review of the benefits and value to our members (starting with a survey).

I encourage you all to promote the wonderful services, benefits and professionalism of our organisation within your respected areas to drive awareness of who we are and what we do as with a strong membership base we can increase our opportunities both within Local Government and Nationally.

Kind regards

Alyce Jordan
Executive Officer
Special Interest Groups
The first Legal and Property Special Interest Group was held for the year which saw 2 presentations from Page Seager around Mental Illness in the Workplace followed by an update on covert surveillance.  Rolph Voss also provided a fantastic update on the changes to the new building regulations which then held a  fantastic discussion around planning and permits across the councils.

We have also scheduled in a Communications and PR special interest group with Font PR as the sponsor occurring on the 23rd August.  Please see the bottom of this newsletter for future event dates.
National Update
The National office is in a good place financially and is operating sustainably.  There has been a slight shift in direction with national working more in the advocacy and policy space.  Melbourne has a new office which is more suited to the size of the operation which has reduced over heads.
In addition special reference was made to the great work LG Professionals are doing in assisting with the development of councils overseas in developing countries.

International Exchange Program with ICMA: 23 Applications were received for the International Exchange Program with ICMA.  Tasmania has had a fantastic response from our members compared to other states.  - Good luck to all that have applied!
