Barrow Runners February Newsletter

Hello <<First Name>>  and welcome to the Barrow Runners Newsletter. We hope you find the below information useful and informative, and if you would like anything including in future please send through to

The last months weekly rundowns, which highlight our race results and successes, are on the news sections of the website.  If you missed them they can be found here

We would like to welcome to the club Rebecca Edmunds, Paul Leaney, Helen Taylor, Naomi Steele, Sharon Fearn, Amy Read and Karen Bell who have all joined us in the last month. We hope you enjoy running with us.

Runner of the Month

Runner of the month for January is Kirsty Hillier.

Kirsty was part of the successful silver medalists Barrow Runners ladies team in the recent Leicestershire County Cross Country Championships, and finished 10th place individually. She followed this up with a strong performance in the Midland Cross Country Championships held on her doorstep at Prestwold Hall, leading the Barrow ladies team home to finish 10th out of 27 teams in the Midlands region. Well done Kirsty, great running in the toughest of disciplines.
If you have nominations for runner of the month please send through to by the end of the calendar month.  These then get discussed and voted on by the committee.
Congratulations to our Chairman Mick Ballard on winning a well deserved 'Unsung Hero' award at the recent LRS Awards.  Barrow Runners would not be what it is without his constant drive and passion for the club. Well done and thank you Mick!

Barrow Club Championships

Hopefully you have all seen the email sent earlier in the month launching the Barrow Club Championships.  Full details can be seen here

As races take place, results will be updated on this page so check back a few days after the first event (Rushcliffe 10k on 5th March).

If you have any feedback or thoughts on what we can include for 2018 please speak with anyone on committee.

Monday Nights - Can you help?

Each Monday our couch to 5k group are running from Humphrey Perkins School in Barrow.  The group has around 30 runners each week, with many now joining the club and running with us on our usual Tuesday / Thursday nights.

We need a few more group leaders to join the group to allow more split pace groups and give our new runners the best experience.  If you are able to help please get in touch with Sue or Mick.

Cross Country Update

Just 2 races left in the Derby Runner Cross Country League and lots still to run for.  All three leagues are very close so teams could either be relegated or win a trophy!

Sunday 19th Feb - Allestree Park
Sunday 5th March - Market Bosworth

Race details for Allestree are now on the calendar, and Bosworth will be added as soon as we receive them.

It would be great to have lots of runners out on the 19th Feb and secure our 1st Division status, taking the pressure off for the last race on the 5th March.

LRRL Update

Entries for the Stilton 7, Race 2 in the 2017 LRRL Winter League will open at 8pm on Sunday 12th February (and close around a week later, if the race limit is not reached before then). There will be no entries on the day.

The delay in making this announcement has been caused by efforts being made to expand the available facilities in order to allow more runners and this has now been achieved.  This means that they have a licence for 500 runners.
LRRL Rules
The rules for LRRL have also been revised and can be seen on

Most of this is just putting down long standing rules in a single document.

The only significant change for 2017 is Ladies teams now require 6 to count (used to be 4), which brings this in line with the male:female ratio of finishers from last season.

Midland 12 and 6 Stage Road Relays

Saturday 25th March at Sutton Park, Birmingham

Final Call for entries - if interested please let Chris know by 26th Feb.
In 1967 the AAA's started supporting a National Road Relay. The first being held in Leicester in April 1967. It was held in Leicester for the next two years, 1968 and 1969. In 1970 the event moved to Sutton Park where it is still held today. There are two road relay events that take place each year: 12/6  stage in spring and the 6/4 stage in Autumn and it will be fantastic to fly the Barrow flag at these events.
Clubs can enter multiple teams of 12 runners for men and 6 runners for women (sadly no mixed event). Each runner runs their leg then hands over to the next relay runner until all runners have completed the course.
-The 12 stages for men consists of 4 long legs (5.38 miles) and 8 short legs (3.165 miles) and begins at 12 noon.
-The 6 stages for women consists of 2 long legs (5.38 miles) and 4 short legs (3.165 miles) and begins at 12:20.
This event is multi-ability; don’t think you’re too slow to take part and don’t be put off by times and records. It is a great event to witness top class running but also to support our team and enjoy doing something different! There is no cost to you and we will organise transport closer to the time but if you are interested or have any questions, please let Chris know, either in person on a club night or
