Hello <<First Name>> and welcome to the Barrow Runners Newsletter for December. We hope you find the below information useful and informative, and if you would like anything including in future please send through to

The last months weekly rundowns are on the news sections of the website.  If you missed them they can be found below

We would like to welcome to the club Kieran Bailey, Emily Alderson, Rod McGowan, Paul Richardson and Caroline Richardson who have all joined us in the last month. We hope you enjoy running with us.

Runner of the Month

Runner of the Month for November is Emma Spencer-Cumberland.
Having just returned from having her second child Emma smashed her half marathon PB at Leicester clocking 1.39, and taking over 10 mins off her previous PB.  This was followed up with a 1.41 at the more difficult Clowne half marathon a few weeks later. She has worked really hard at getting herself back to full fitness and this has resulted in a quantum leap in her race times.

Well done Emma!

If you have nominations for runner of the month please send through to by the end of the calendar month.  These then get discussed and voted on by the committee.
The race is now full, great to see over 70 Barrow Runners on the start list, but we still need volunteers and marshals.  If you are able to help, or can encourage a friend or family member to spare a couple of hours, please let Mick know.

Charnwood Sports Awards

Many of you will have seen that our club chairman Mick Ballard won the 'Outstanding Achievement to Sport and Physical activity' at the Charnwood Sports Awards.

Mick is the heart and soul of Barrow Runners, and has been for over 30 years, and I'm sure you'll all be as pleased to see his contributions recognised as we are.

We would also like to congratulate past member and friend of many in the club Jo Spencer, who was runner up in the category. Jo does an incredible amount of work driving physical activity at her workplace Thermofisher, with many colleagues now in running clubs in the local area. A really well deserved nomination and great to see running recognised at the awards.

Fancy Dress Xmas Run - Tuesday 20th December

Training on Tuesday 20th December will be a fancy dress run, followed by mulled wine and nibbles at club president Jo Chappell's house (49 Beverage Street). Everyone welcome!

The evening includes the draw for the Christmas raffle, with proceeds to 2016 charity MOVE.

Spring 10k Programme

Following the success of the first 10k training block using the new track facilities at Ratcliffe College, the club will repeat the structured 10k training program each Thursday for 12 weeks beginning 12th January. This group will be additional to the current Thursday sessions which will continue as detailed on the website.
The 10k sessions will continue to be coached by Chris Neil and include the following:
- Individual target setting
- Tailored 10k training program
- Thursday night interval session coaching, specific to 10k
- Technique review and feedback
The coaching is aimed at anyone wanting to improve performance and focus on speed endurance and the club will charge £20 for the program to cover the additional track hire. Due to the individual focus there are limited spaces, which will be offered first come first served.

Chris is a Leader in Running Fitness with 12 years competition experience at middle/long distance over track, road and cross country. His primary focus over this period has been 10k distance, using interval workouts as the core of his training.
To register your interest, sign up or if you have any questions, please contact

* In addition to the program, there will be two taster sessions, both taking place at Ratcliffe College, 7pm start on Thursdays 15th December and 5th January. These two sessions will be maximum of 5k of intervals and will be similar to the first coached session of the 10k program, incorporating a progressive warm-up and technique drills. There is no need to sign up for these taster sessions, turn up at the track ready to start at 7pm, from the track start line and report to Chris.

New Vests

Thank you to everyone who was able to collect their new vests last week.  We had over 120 attend on the night which was excellent to see

It does mean we still have 60 to distribute, which will now be by arrangement at Tuesday / Thursday training nights.

If you are wanting to collect please drop Monique a message with your size and at least a couple of days notice. Mon will then confirm and ensure she brings sufficient vests / sizes with her.

Club Charity Nomination

Members may be aware that each year as well as the Club making a donation to the Air Ambulance in respect of our use of Prestwold, we also try and support a local charity closer to home, raising the awareness of the particular charity and donating some of the money raised from the Boxing Day handicap race and the Christmas raffle.
This year the chosen charity was MOVE, and we are now looking to you to nominate a charity for next year (2017).
As mentioned above, we are looking for a small charity or good cause (rather than one of the large Nationals), that has specifically helped or impacted on a club member or their family.
If you would like to nominate a charity or good cause, please send the details and the reasons behind the nomination to Nigel Hillier, Club Secretary by the 31st December. All nominations will then be discussed and voted on at the next Barrow Runners Committee meeting on January 10th 2017 and a decision announced in the next newsletter.

XC Update

Next week we are back on XC with round 4 of the Derby Runner League at Bradgate Park. Full details are on calendar.

After the last round our mens and ladies teams finished 5th and 8th respectively, and the combined team 4th.

Overall team tables after round 2 have both the mens and combined teams standing at 4th, only a couple of positions from a podium spot. The ladies are in 8th place, currently bottom of league 1, but it's still early days. If we keep getting good numbers at races we will soon climb the tables.

For those wanting more mud, the Leicestershire, Midlands and National XC Championships are all now open for entries. It's a very good year for Barrow, with both the Midland and Nationals being so close to home!

Leicestershire (Burbage Common) 7th Jan

Midlands (Prestwold Hall) 27th Jan

National Champs (Notts) 25th Feb

Entry links are on the event calendar.

Barrow 6

We wanted to inform all members that after much consideration we will not be running the Barrow 6 this year. We have shared this decision with LRRL, who will be informing other clubs shortly but wanted to ensure our members were informed first.

The main factor in the decision is that the unprecedented number of road closures and increased traffic in the village left us unable to deliver what we felt was an event that could guarantee the safety of all runners.

This was a recommendation from the Barrow Race Committee, the full Committee of the Club met this week and endorsed the decision.

It is a decision we have not taken lightly, but feel we had little choice in making.

The Boxing Day handicap is not affected and will go ahead as planned.

If you have any queries please direct to Nigel in the first instance.
That's it from us this month.  On behalf of the committee we wish you all a very merry Christmas and look forward to running with you in 2017.
