Barrow Runners October E-Newsletter

Hello <<First Name>> and welcome to the Barrow Runners E-Newsletter. We hope you are enjoying the new format, both these monthly e-newsletters and the weekly Barrow 'Run' downs that are going on the website every Monday.

The weekly updates will always be mostly running focused and give an overview of the weeks achievements. These e-newsletters will have a wider club focus and give key information and updates from the committee.

Before we go any further can I thank our Newsletter editor Farah Robson who has decided to call it a day after 5 years editing the newsletter, but will remain on the committee. Many thanks Farah, you did a great job under difficult circumstances.

I must admit I was a bit worried about how the coaching would go when the two groups were both at Ratcliffe on a Thursday evening, but I was delighted with how the groups were managed.  The two coaches on that occasion were Chris Neil and John Rees - Chris took the 2 inside lanes and John took the outside lanes and it all went well.

Monday night is our beginners' group night and it is now in it's fourth week. Sue and Paul have already attracted 28 new members.  Well done Sue and Paul, I'm personally really grateful to you for getting this one off the ground.

I would like to welcome to the club Clare Cunningham, Matt Hillier, Chris Tighe, Neil Cobley, Karen Griffin and Kevin Gamble who have all joined (or re-joined) us in the last month. We hope you enjoy running with us.

Finally I'm really pleased to inform you that our new vests have been ordered and are on the way.

I look forward to seeing you all on 11th November at our Presentation Evening.

Mick Ballard
Chairman

Runner of the Month

Runner of the Month for September is Linda Pullen.  Linda's times have been tumbling recently and in September she set a 15 min half marathon PB, with a 2.08.33 at the Great North Run.  Just 2 weeks later she knocked a further 2 minutes off this with a 2.06.21 at the Robin Hood half marathon in Nottingham. Well done Linda!

Virgin Money London Marathon - Barrow Runners Club Ballot

Barrow Runners will be applying for club places for the 2017 London Marathon due to our membership of England Athletics. The date clubs can apply from is Monday 24th October, so I am not yet in a position to advise how many places we will be allocated. This is based on the size of club membership, and last year we were allocated two places, but I will confirm the actual number of places we have received as soon as I know.

It is our intention to hold the draw for the club places at the club Presentation Evening on Friday 11th November 2016.

Qualifying Criteria for inclusion in the draw is as follows:

1. You must have received a rejection from the official VMLM ballot for next years race.

2. You must be a fully paid up member of Barrow Runners for the 2016/17 year and have joined Barrow Runners before 1st June 2016.

3. Members who have received a Club place in the last 3 years cannot enter the ballot.

4. If successful the ballot place is non-transferable.

5. If the ballot winner is injured and unable to take part in the 2017 VMLM, they are allowed to defer their entry until the following year.

6. Club Ballot winners should run in their Barrow Club Vest.

7. Barrow Runners Committee decision is final in the event of any issues.

8. Entry fee will be payable by the winners of the ballot places via an on line facility that VMLM set up for club members details of which I will provide.

Anyone wishing to be considered, please email (nhilli156@gmail.com) or pm me on Facebook which a copy of your rejection by 5pm Monday 31st October 2016.
Leicester Marathon Sunday 23rd October 2016

If you are not running the half or the full marathon and can help or you have friends or family that can kindly volunteer to marshal on the day of the race then please get in touch with Paul Zurawliw on 07966 526549 or paulz@ntlworld.com.

Your help would be greatly appreciated as without volunteers, races like this could not take place.

Cross Country

The dark nights and cold weather aren't all bad news as it will soon be the start of the cross country season! As a club we take part in the Derby Runner League, with some runners also entering in the county, midland and national championships later in the year.

Derby Runner
There are 7 races this year held at various venues around Leicestershire and Derbyshire, each race is 5-6 miles over a variety of XC terrains. All races are enter on the day. It is a friendly league with a great atmosphere.  All new members and existing ones are very welcome.

Barrow team vests/ shirts must be worn, 2nd claim members are allowed to run and gain individual points but they cannot score for the team. Barrow Runners are currently in division 1 in all 3 tables, the men’s, women’s and a mixed team.

The men score by counting the first 8 including 2 veterans (40+) and the women need 4 to score including 1 vet. The mixed team score by counting the first 7 men (including 1 vet) and first 3 women (including 1 vet).

Don’t think 'I'm not fast enough' though - as it is a team sport you can prevent other teams from scoring!

All race dates are now on the calendar, including race specific details confirming exact location and timings for the first race on 30th October.  Full details for the remaining races will be added to the calendar as soon as we receive them.

On race day when you arrive at the venue just look for the Barrow flag and tent and put your name down. It only costs £3.00 (some venues are £4 which includes parking).

A token is given at the finish line and handed in to the team scorer. Your position are added together and the lowest team score wins. There are team prizes and individual prizes given at the end of the season which also include age category prizes. Race results and tables are produced a few days after each race.

Car sharing has become essential due to the amount of runners.

Just remember your money, club vest, trail shoes (with grip) or spikes (there are some courses with hard surfaces which you will be told about).

It would be good if we could have some names on Facebook of people attending so we know we have a full team. Come and enjoy the fun, mud and hills. It has been known for bacon butties and cake to appear after the race!

Championship Races
In the new year there is the Leicestershire Championships (7th Jan), closely followed by Midland (28th Jan) and National Championships (26th Feb).  These are all pre entry events and information is circulated nearer the time, we always try to get a team in. The Nationals are in Nottingham this year so close to home!

Each year we also enter teams in the XC Relays(22 Oct), and we usually have runners selected to represent Leicestershire in the Inter Counties XC (11th March at Prestwold Hall.)

Even if you aren't able to run it is worth putting dates in your diaries, the Nationals and Inter Counties attract some of the countries top runners and we are very lucky to have them so close to home.

If you have any questions just ask us, either in person, on facebook, or drop us a message on captains@barrowrunners.co.uk
