The NDIS Workforce Research Report for Ipswich reveals there are 4,604 active, registered NDIS participants in the region.
  • That’s 58% of the predicted growth
  •  The largest category of participants is those with (see below graph)
                 o   autism 
                 o   intellectual disability
  • The Ipswich report shows that Capacity Building is the largest category of NDIS support (assessment, therapy and/or training by an occupational therapist, speech therapist, physiotherapist or registered nurse, early childhood intervention, or support worker).
  • Core supports has the largest expenditure (assistance with daily living, personal activities, household tasks, shared living arrangements / supported independent living, transport; and social and community participation).

Workforce statistics you need to know
  • Yellow Cards applications increased by more than 150% between 2016 - 2018 
  • The largest number of workers in the Industry is female, aged 50-59 years for social assistance, residential care and allied health services, however the largest number of workers employed in physiotherapy services, optometry and optical dispensing is between 20-29 years (see below graph).

Future skills and workforce projections in the region are…
Demand for NDIS workers and skills is still growing with 8,000 predicted participants for the region meaning increased levels of support for people receiving supports under the NDIS.
  • To meet regional growth a required workforce of 2800 FTE is required
  • Most in demand roles are allied health professionals, therapists and therapy support works and individual support workers.
  • Regional job advertisements in the sector, show top skills and attributes sought after are:
                o   Communication (e.g., the ability to communicate effectively with people with disability)
                o   First Aid 
                o   Consultation
 
              o   Child Protection

                o   Quality Standards 

Local solutions and recommendations include…
  • Meet increased demand though diversity in the workforce to meet the needs of NDIS participants, recognition of prior training and addressing the shortage of allied health professionals.
  • Providing training solutions through online training, traineeships, customer-centred training and training of support coordinatiors.

The NDIS Workforce Research Project is in partnership with WorkAbility Queensland and Jobs Queensland and has been led by Central Queensland University (CQU) CSIRO’s Data61, and Global Community Resourcing.  Research has been conducted over 2019 and reviews the disability workforce across six regions following the rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) including:

WorkAbility Queensland has released a crucial mapping resource for employer and workers to navigate the training programs and employment incentives for NDIS related occupations.

The online document, Funding and Support for Skill Development in NDIS-related Occupations in Queensland is available for download here

The resource was produced in partnership with Jobs Queensland as part of the NDIS Workforce Research Project and aims to provide a user-friendly manual to better understand the range of funding and supports available for workforce development.
