Broken homes: a record year of home demolitions in occupied East Jerusalem

For decades, Israel has been accused of using home demolitions as a tool to control the Palestinian population in the occupied territories. Israel approves less than two percent of all requests for building permits submitted by Palestinians, and then razes the homes and shops that lack one. In recent months, Israel has also ramped up its policy of punitive demolitions - destroying the family homes of suspected Palestinian attackers - despite the practice being labelled a war crime. 2016 turned out to be a record year, with the highest number of demolitions and displacements since the United Nations began recording these trends in 2009.

Worst abuses against Palestinian children in 2016
A report by Defeimage-childrennse for Children International - Palestine
West Bank children suffered the highest losses of the past decade with 32 child fatalities at the hands of Israeli forces and security guards in 2016. In Gaza, children slipped deeper into poverty, as the blockade began its ninth year, with some still living in protracted displacement. Significant numbers of West Bank children were also displaced as Israel carried out a record-breaking pace of home demolitions, even as the number of Jewish-only settlements increased. Equally alarming, Israel’s systematic military detention of Palestinian children showed no signs of abatement.

Despite the pain, 2016 witnessed impressive gains for BDS
A report by the Global BDS Movement
The Palestinian-led global campaign for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) continued to grow over the past year. This article by the Palestine BDS National Committee highlights eight achievements in 2016, from various multinational companies, trade unions and churches choosing to divest from Israel, to dozens of local councils across Europe declaring themselves "Israeli Apartheid-Free Zones" or "settlement-free zones", to BDS even impacting the Oscars and the Rio Olympics.
