Palestinians flee Haifa, 1948
The Australian Friends of Palestine Association warmly invites our members and friends to this year’s commemoration of the Palestinian Nakba or 'catastrophe' - the ethnic cleansing of Palestine in 1948.

Paul Heywood-Smith, The Case For PalestineTraditionally observed on 15 May, one day after the withdrawal of the British Mandate troops from Palestine and at the height of the ethnic cleansing which had been underway since December 1947, this year we will be remembering it on the 16 May, being 100 years to the day since the ratification of the infamous Sykes-Picot Agreement in 1916.

This secret treaty between the British and the French betrayed the understandings given to the Arabs earlier in the year to induce them to rise against the Ottoman Turks.  The Sykes-Picot Agreement laid the basis for the treatment of Palestine as a spoil of war and the troubles of the contemporary Middle East.

Our Patron, Paul Heywood-Smith QC, author of The Case for Palestine: The perspective of an Australian Observer, will discuss historical, political, legal and ethical aspects of the current difficult situation in Israel and Palestine and answer your questions. Wine and cheese will be served.

Date/time: Monday 16 May 2016, 6:00pm (for 6:30pm start)
Venue: Hetzel Room, Institute Building, State Library of South Australia,
Cnr North Terrace and Kintore Ave, Adelaide SA
