Reinstate Bassem Tamimi's Visa!

On 4 April 2017, the Australian government granted Palestinian activist, Bassem Tamimi a visa to travel to Australia.  Tamimi has been invited to participate in a speaking tour of Australia by the Palestinian Action Group (Sydney), Friends of Palestine (Perth) and The Social Research Institute (Melbourne) in April 2017.
Tamimi’s visa was revoked on 5 April on the grounds that: ‘there is a risk that members of the public will react adversely to your (Tamimi’s) presence in Australia regarding your views of the ongoing political tensions in the Middle East’.
Denying entry to an individual on the basis of their political views is a violation of freedom of speech. Further, this decision implies Palestinians are unable to enter Australia unless they renounce their political commitment to self-determination and sovereignty - a claim that is supported by the United Nations.
This decision is a blatant case of discrimination. Benjamin Netanyahu was recently invited to Australia to speak to the Prime Minister. Many of Netanyahu’s policies, including the continued expansion of the West Bank settlements, have been denounced by the UN Security Council. Netanyahu’s visit provoked sizeable protests in cities across Australia reflecting a clear ‘adverse public reaction’. That Netanyahu was not only granted entry, but invited to address the Prime Minister, indicates that the government is more concerned with silencing pro-Palestinian voices than avoiding politically controversial views.

ABC Interview: Palestinian author Laila El-Haddad

Australian Broadcasting Corporation, LATELINE, Broadcast: 06/04/2017
Reporter: Jeremy Fernandez

The Palestinian author and journalist, Laila el-Haddad, uses her cookbook, 'The Gaza Kitchen', and her blog 'Gaza Mum,' to share her family recipes with a global audience. We'll hear from her shortly. But first, let's take a look at how she uses food as a way to preserve Gaza's history and culture.

PACK PASSION INTO EACH ENCOUNTER
AFOPA member and Occupational Therapist, Ms Merlin Nathan, reports back on her recent visit to Lebanon, 19-25 February 2017, with the Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF).

I had the opportunity to assist in the review and implementation of individual programs with the therapist M Hayan at Al Basheer Hospital, Tripoli, Lebanon.
In the five days we saw a total of 69 patients (a personal record, I might add!).
We saw 31 cases of children with scoliosis, nerve injuries at birth, hypoxia, and post-operative orthopedic complications.
Another 25 cases of various spinal injuries and disability outcomes and 11 cases with upper limb fractures were also assessed.

Read more about Merlin's mission to Lebanon at the AFOPA Blog.
