Winds of Change
An eagle knows when a storm is approaching long before it breaks but rather than fight the winds which bring the wrath of the storm, the eagle flies to some high spot and waits for the winds to come. When the storm hits, it sets its wings so that the wind… Read More
Someone Like Me Who Understands
A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the pups and set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the eyes of a little boy.
We who sport the label of parent have the responsibility of showing love to our children and this can occur in many different ways. But often we miss the mark of communicating that love to and for our children in much the same way we do with our spouse or significant other. Ponder this joke which really isn’t a laughing matter, but gets the point across.
Man’s wife says, “You don’t tell me you love me anymore,” and the husband replies, “I told you the day we got married, if it changes I’ll let you know.”
While we may not take the showing or giving of love to this degree, the point remains, we and our children need daily affirmation of being loved or valued by another. When it doesn’t occur, this disconnect sends us to seek another avenue to fulfill this need. We at Personal Solutions know there was no manual issued when we married and subsequently had children, so here are some of those positive affirmations you can say to your child; and by the way, try it on your spouse as well, you’ll be surprised at how well it works and it makes them feel. Here are just ten things which will dramatically change your family dynamics:
I love being your parent (husband/wife, etc.).
You are important and your opinions matter.
You are right, I appreciate your view.
I believe in you and accept you in who you are.
You are valuable.
I know you did your best and I am proud of you.
That’s a great question.
Seeing you happy, makes me happy.
That was really brave.
What do you think?
There are many ways to affirm the value of those closest to us, but regardless of the verbiage, it is beginning the process that’s important, the willingness to implement a new habit of daily affirming and praising our children. Remember, children mimic what they see and hear; so spouses affirm, praise and show value to each other in front of your children, it will pay great dividends.
Oh, having children is not a prerequisite for showing a child or person that they are valued.
