 Dear Mile in My Shoes family,

As we head into May and beautiful spring weather it is hard to believe that we are heading towards the end of Cycle 1!  We’ve got some exciting opportunities for everyone to get in on the MiMS action below, but first some great news from the past month:
  • Our current team of Residential Members is improving like crazy, despite being a speedy, athletic bunch to begin with!  Nearly all of our members got a “PR” (personal record) during the 2nd timed mile last week, with several members scoring times in the 6-minute range. We can barely keep up!
  • The team got an intro to Yoga in April when Run Mentor and yoga instructor Krista led us in a Saturday-morning session on the grass of the Walker Sculpture Garden. It was a gorgeous morning to stretch & strengthen. When it was over one Resident Member, who had never done yoga before, responded to Krista’s call for questions with “Can we keep you?” Our sentiments exactly!
  • You may have spotted alumni member and Emanuel Housing Resident Jeff if you run down by the river – he’s training for Grandma’s Marathon! We’re so impressed with him for wanting to tackle his second marathon (his 1st was Twin Cities last year), and for showing that MiMS does indeed create lifelong runners. Give him a cheer if you spot him out there!
  • The MiMS Board of Directors is excited to bring on two new members.  Dina Carpenter will be coming on as our Development Chair, and Barb Leininger as a member-at-large. They both bring an enormous wealth of experience and passion to the organization and we are looking forward to growing the reach of the MiMS program with their help & guidance.
Coming Up:
  • Saturday Runs start this weekend! Wanting to run with the team but can’t make the weekdays? Email our volunteer coordinator to get involved in our Saturday 8am “long” runs.  All runs start from Higher Ground except May 21st, when we head back to Magna Fitness to focus on running drills.
  • Looking for ways to get more involved and support Mile in My Shoes? Here are two opportunities to participate outside of the morning runs.
    • On June 4th our Resident Members will tackle the rolling hills of Hyland Park in Bloomington during the MiMS 5K/10K race – a benefit race for MiMS. While right now some of them still have doubts that they can run a 3.1 or 6.2 mile race, on that Saturday one month from now they will find out they CAN do it. And it will be an incredible thing to witness. Come and be a part of it - either by racing or volunteering along the course.     • On July 20th Downtown Minneapolis will be overtaken by a parade of runners during the Lifetime Torchlight 5K. You can be a part of this celebration AND support MiMS by becoming a FundRacer. Just $100 gets you a free entry + a MiMS shirt + LOTS OF HUGS. Raise more $$, get more incredible prizes – including the coveted MiMS hoodie! Register here, or email me for more info.
  • Finally, we are looking to improve our overall marketing/social media game. If you (or someone you know) have skills in this area and are interested in becoming our Humblebrag Mentor please reach out to us! There is also the possibility of making this an internship.
