Our first cycle of the 2016 season came to a close this past Saturday as eight Team Higher Ground Residential Members & two Team Emanuel Alumni Members, running alongside their Run Mentors, crossed the finish line (by way of giant cheer arch) at the Mile in My Shoes 5K/10K in Hyland Park on Saturday. While the *actual* distance they each ran may be up for debate, the pride felt by the entire MiMS team was not. For three Resident Members, this marked their very first race. While Resident Member Cardius dramatically collapsed at the finish line with a giant smile on his face, having given his first race his all, Resident Member Jeff expressed his emotions in his usual, quieter fashion. “Before MiMS, I had no friends,” Run Mentor Krista heard him say a few miles into the race, “But now, I have forty friends.”
While Team Emanuel Alumni Jeff is now a marathoner, he had a first of his own on Saturday – pacing a Residential Member. “When I first heard that I would not just be running the race but I would be pacing a member, I wasn’t sure if I could do it,” he said. “But now I know that I have experience to share – I could assure him that he would finish, it didn’t matter how fast or slow we went. It was an easy as running a marathon!” he finished with a wink.
The Run Mentor “Core Team” organized a huge potluck picnic to cap off a great morning, complete with lawn games and delicious donations from Butter Bakery, Rustica, and True Stone Coffee. Big thanks to Mountain Goat Running for putting on this race, Mill City Running for flipping flapjacks at the finish, and Brooks for donating shoes to the winners! After all this excitement, the team is taking a well-deserved break from morning runs … for about a week! Orientations for Cycle 2 begin June 14th with our First Mile run on June 23rd.
Coming Up Saturday Runs: Saturday Runs will be in full swing for Cycle 2 as our Resident Members prepare for fall marathons & half-marathons. Saturday Runs will now begin at 7am. We are very excited to announce that Dave Baker, MiMS Alumnus and Resident Mentor, will be taking charge of Cycle 2 Saturday Runs. Dave, who has been with the team since DAY ONE in 2014, completed the Twin Cities Marathon last October and now he’ll be passing along his experience & expertise to a whole new crop of marathon & half-marathon hopefuls.

Thanks to all who helped make Cycle 1 such a huge success. See you back in a month when we have a whole new crop of Resident Members to introduce!
