Town Memorial Clock Restoration
The Shire of Katanning has commenced planning for the restoration of the Town Memorial Clock to its original condition. Located on the corner of Austral Terrace and Clive Street, the clock is one of only two that are operational in the public realm; the second one in WA Parliament House.
Restoration works are to include:
During the Commonwealth Jubilee celebrations in 1951, the community of Katanning decided to erect a memorial to 'honour their pioneer women especially those bush nurses whose unselfish devotion to their fellows should never be forgotten'. The construction of the clock began in 1955 and was unveiled 16 March 1956 by Sister Elizabeth Grover. Elizabeth Grover was at the time of unveiling, the oldest surviving daughter of William Grover, who was one of the first settlers in the shire and second policeman to be stationed at Police Pools.
- Rebuilding of the clock mechanisms cabinet
- Cleaning and repair of the clock mechanism in the base of the clock tower
- Cleaning and repair of the mechanism that drives the clock hands
- Clock faces and hands removed, repainted and reinstalled
- Electrical components refurbished where required
- Lights on the clock faces to be replaced

Piesse Lake Update
Shire of Katanning operational staff are currently working on the Piesse Lake nutrient stripping basin. The Maintenance team are undertaking this important project between other works, so they are progressing the work as they can. If you pass by the project, you will notice that grated pits have been installed behind the eastern facing concrete wall. There is also a bund being constructed about 5m behind the grated pits. The enclosed area will become a nutrient stripping basin.
The next stage will be importing of stockpiled earth backfill to construct earth batters, and then filling the enclosed area with aggregate, topped off with natural topsoil to provide a planting medium. On completion of project, the existing concrete retaining structures will be hidden behind a 1:3 earth batter, and the nutrient stripping basin will be planted out with natural reeds, giving the structure a more natural look, whilst operating to clean water from the adjacent lake area. Staff will continue to work on this location over the coming weeks.

Talking about: The Battlers
Snow was one of the drifters and wanderers of Australia in the '30s whose home was the open road; Dancy, a hard-bitten young woman, had been deserted on the track. Their story, and that of the motley crowd of battlers that travelled the roads looking for work or avoiding it, is told with compassion and humour in this rich, human tale of life in the raw.
Join the hunt for the Golden Feather!!!
Katanning Public Library is hosting FORM’s treasure hunt for feathers. There are blank ones to be decorated, silver ones and the special golden one. Either one could win you a prize. Come into the Katanning Public Library and join the search.
It’s been a month since Katanning Public Library transitioned over to the new management system. The staff at the library are slowly getting familiar with the system and all the different and extensive features that Spydus offers. Katanning Public Library is slowly initiating the Inter Library Loans request again. All the staff at the library really appreciate how supportive and understanding the community has been with the glitches we have had along the way and our learning process.
A big thank you to our community members who have donated a great range of books to the library. A lot of the items are in fantastic condition to share with the rest of the community. The books look great on the shelves, and the rest of the community are enjoying being able to access a greater variety of books. Go Katanning Community!
Katanning Toy Library (KTL) is welcoming new members now! KTL is a not-for profit, fully volunteer run community group which loans out toys, games and puzzles to members like a book library. Our toys are suitable for children from 6 months to 6+ years of age. We have approximately 450 toys available for loan including puzzles and boardgames, baby toys, imaginative play centres (kitchens, tool workshops, shops), push-along and ride on toys and bikes, and construction sets like duplo. We are currently open 10.30-11.30am Tuesday and Saturday in the Katanning Library. KTL was incorporated on 24 March 2018. We hope to organise a celebration for later in the year.
