Community Water Supply Program

The Katanning Leisure Centre has received a boost to its water storage and catchment capacity with the installation of a new dam and storage tank on the site.  The project received funding from the Department of Water’s Community Water Supply Program in 2016 and was recently completed to take advantage of the current winter rains.

The installation of the new water storage tank, improvement to catchment areas and the creation of an onsite dam near the Quartermaine Oval has improved the site’s capacity to capture and store water.  The water will be used to irrigate local sporting grounds and public open spaces helping reduce the reliance on scheme water potentially reducing the cost to the community.

The initiative focused on the Katanning Leisure Centre site’s potential to harvest, store and supply non-potable water.  The design has provision for future expansion of the system and has the capacity to connect with other catchment and storage areas within the Katanning town site.

One of the key benefits of the system is the ability to provide non-potable water for use by farmers, emergency services, the Shire and community in times of need.  The project is one of a number of measures that the Shire of Katanning is looking to implement to combat local drought conditions and improve water security for the town.

Ranger Information
Reminder on various issues
All dogs and cats over the age of three months are required by law to be registered and microchipped, this makes it easier to return pets to their rightful owners and negates the need to impound them, this will not only save additional costs and charges to the owners but also means your pets are returned home.
Many residents still do not display house numbers and this makes it difficult to identify who lives at the property when dealing with enquiries and other matters.  More importantly in an emergency situation where time is critical, emergency services such as police, fire and ambulance attendance may make a big difference in outcomes.
The use of disabled parking bays by those who are not authorised to use them has increased notably, cautions will no longer be issued and unlawful use may result in a $300 parking infringement notice being issued.
In relation to wandering dogs, they will be impounded and where the owner is identified and it is a continuing offence a $200 infringement under the Dog Act may be issued, the law requires all dogs to be securely confined on private property.
The Dog Act Amendment Bill of 2013 now allows the keeping of more than 2 dogs in residential areas, however permission from the shire must be obtained, failure to do so may result in infringement notices being issued or in the case of continual failure to comply a prosecution may be commenced.
All dogs in a public place that is not a designated dog exercise area must be on a leash at all times, this prevents dogs from causing traffic hazards, dogs attacks and other nuisance issues, again there are penalties that apply for failing to comply.
The shire has installed litter bins throughout the town centre and this is to keep the street scaping free from rubbish and enhance the attractive appearance of our town, there are penalties applicable under the Litter Act for littering and the ranger will be active in ensuring compliance.

Life Long Readers Book Club
Meeting date: Friday, August 4.
Time: 2:00pm - 4:00pm
Talking about: Lord of the Flies by William Golding
Next Book: Due to changes to the inter-library loan system we will now be subscribing to a book hiring service. As we are finalising the details of this at time of publication we cannot confirm the next title, however we can assure readers that book club will continue.

Urgent information for library patrons:
After a recent review of the inter-library loan system within Western Australia, State and Public Libraries WA will be making some changes to inter-library loans, commencing 1 July 2017 for a 6 month trial period:
  • Fiction items will be available for inter-library lending from 12 months after purchase.  This applies to fiction in all formats for both metropolitan and country libraries.
What does this mean for you?
Regrettably, it means we will no longer be able to inter-library loan new release fiction for our patrons (including DVDs and sound recordings). We will do our best to keep up with purchasing new release titles, however please keep in mind that our resources are limited so not all titles will be able to be purchased.
  • Customers from country libraries will be have access to a total of 24 inter-library loans per member per annum
What does this mean for you?
If you are a regular borrower; 2 inter-library loan requests per month, per borrower membership.
  • If an external loan (from outside the WA public library system) is requested by a library customer, a fee based on recovering costs will be charged.
What does this mean for you?
Items that are requested from interstate, medical or university libraries will incur a minimum charge of $16.50, plus delivery/administration charges if applicable.
  • The trial will be evaluated at the end of the 6 month period.
What does this mean for you?
From January 2018 borrowing statistics and feedback given during the trial will be used to evaluate the success of the trial and to consider what, if any, changes are required.
We understand that this will be a difficult adjustment to make for many of our patrons however we will do our best to cause the least disruption to your reading.
