POAA Gives Meaning to the Motto:
"In Business For Yourself, Not By Yourself."

'Twas the Night Before Christmas is the opening line to one of the most widely known poems by an American author. A Visit from St. Nicholas was first published anonymously in 1823, and in 1837 it was ultimately attributed to a Professor of Oriental and Greek Literature, Clement Clarke Moore. By portraying Santa Claus as a jolly old elf who magically delivers gifts and goodies to well-behaved children on Christmas Eve, the scholarly professor accidentally but effectively shifted focus away from the religious associations of Christmas Day to the child-centered Christmastide that dominates the Winter holiday season to this day. On this Christmas Eve, the greatest gift that POAA can give to owners is hope - an optimistic state of mind based on the expectation of positive outcomes in each of our personal and professional lives, despite the unprecedented challenges of 2020. While humbugs will scoff at hope as a uniquely human weakness, hope is actually one of the greatest strengths of humankind because without hope, no one would be bothered to seek treatments for deadly diseases or to fight against injustice.
Last week’s newsletter introduced the Three Kings of Orient Christmas carol to spotlight an Appeal to Authority fallacy in PF’s latest update about its holiday cookie crisis. This week’s Christmas Eve newsletter highlights the poem authored by an esteemed Professor of the Oriental Literature to offer our gift of hope, and in keeping with our Asian theme an opportunity to examine an excerpt from a 1959-60 political campaign speech that employed a rhetorical fallacy through a clever trope (a rhetorical device used to hammer home an idea by repeating it over and again).

The precise definitions for the two Chinese characters that comprise the word ‘crisis’ are ‘precarious’ and ‘inflection point’ - not ‘danger’ and ‘opportunity’ - but politicians and corporate executives will seldom miss an opportunity to exploit the inherent flexibility of language to advance compelling narratives with little regard for relevant facts. It is important for owners to understand that the true meaning and intent of words are often subjected to contrived interpretations that serve the interests of one party at the expense of the other.

The Twelvetide marks the start of the end to another the winter holiday season, and our holiday cookie crisis too. PF capped and cut our DSD orders for holiday cookies throughout this holiday season while it promoted and sold the exact same best-selling varieties directly to consumers looking to put Santa’s favorites on plates all over the country tonight, and for festivities during the final days of the holiday rush for DSD owners. TeamPOAA hopes that all owners are discussing this serious matter with their legal counsel, and that they will notify POAA with their recommendations about the best way for owners to proceed.

In the meantime, we share the closing line of A Visit From St. Nicholas

"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night."

Insofar as many owners already make charitable donations to a wide variety of worthy causes during the holiday season, we remind everyone that POAA relies on your generous donations, and offers payment plans for owners who cannot afford to pay all at once for a Platinum, Gold or Basic Membership.
