Kuumba Summer Camp Recap

We had a great summer, and we'd love to share some of the highlights with you.

Kuumba Summer Camp is designed to keep students active and engaged through June, July and August - preventing "summer slide" and taking control of the Achievement Gap.  Regular camp activities include field trips, problem-solving, chess club, language, music, dance, physical education, art, and collaborative projects.

This issue of UjimWeekly will shed some light on some of the great activities that happened this summer.

Chess is one of the many daily activities, which engage our students and keep their minds sharp.
During Mr. Booker's class, the students put their dexterity to the test by having fun with a cup-stacking activity.  Coordination is one of the many important ways to stimulate cognition.
Academics & Arts

The summer program is broken into two parts: an academic-based program in the morning, and an arts-based program in the afternoon.  All students registered in summer camp participate in both parts of the program.

The design of this program keeps academic concepts fresh, preparing them for the upcoming school year, while also keeping things fun, interesting, and full of enriching experiences.
Weekly field trips are a fun and engaging part of the Kuumba Summer Program.  Below you will find some brief recaps on a few of the field trips that occurred this summer.
Field Trip to the Philadelphia Zoo

On July 13th, K-8th grade had the pleasure of taking a field trip to the Philadelphia Zoo.  The students, naturally filled with curiousity, did not let the rain spoil their good time.  They enjoyed real-life interactions with animals that seemed would only exist in fairy tales.

Field Trip to the Blue Rocks Game

On July 19th, Kuumba summer campers had the opportunity to attend a Blue Rocks game.  Eating ballpark franks and soaking in the atmosphere of America's pastime was a blast, but everyone's favorite moment was getting a chance to meet Rocky!

Field Trip to Clementon Park, NJ

Year in and year out, the field trip to Clementon Park is always a huge hit.  Whether they were playing in the wave pool or whipping around on an amusement park ride, Kuumba campers kept their faces bright and their spirits high.  As usual, grades K-8  were able to enjoy the weekly field trip.

ClasothWeek StudenothWeek

This is our opportunity to highlight some of the great behaviors and accomplishments that have been going on at Kuumba Academy Charter School

The Class of the Week award goes to Ms Brooks-Porter's class, 7A.

Full of personality and always excited to learn, class 7A enters every day ready to be challenged. This class knows how to be both active in the classroom and respectful to their teachers and classmates.

The Student of the Week award goes to Breanna, who is a true scholar.

Being an active member of class 7A, and a role model for her peers, Breanna embraces learning, and goes above and beyond in all of her work.  Way to go!!
