Kuumba Graduates its FIRST 8th Grade Class

After 17 years of slowly building on its successes, Kuumba graduated its first 8th grade class on Monday, June 6th, 2016.  Many of these students have been with Kuumba since kindergarten, and have seen Kuumba expand to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, as well as transition from 519 Market St. to the Community Education Building.

This milestone for both the 8th graders and Kuumba Academy was honored with an official Senate Tribute by Senator Margaret Rose Henry: "recognizing the significant milestone in the continuing growth and commitment of a much valued educational institution in the First State."

The Umoja Festival

On Friday, May 27th, Kuumba Academy took a break from daily school activies and retreated to Banning Park for a day full of carnival games and field day activities.  The sounds of laughter; and the smells of popcorn, cotton candy, and water ice, filled the air.  With the theme of "unity", the Umoja Festival involved students and families from Kindergarten to 8th grade.

The CEB Book Fair

The Community Education Building hosted a campus wide Scholastic Book Fair in May.   Community volunteers helped campus students pick out 1138 books, which could equate to 204,000 minutes of reading.  64 lucky children won a raffle and went home with a free book!
Class of the Week & Student of the Week
The Class of the Week award goes to Ms Hepburn's classroom.  Class 3C, has worked tremendously hard this year to meet their curriculum requirements, all the while displaying our habits of scholarship: respect, responsibility, creativity, and especially persistence!
The Student of the Week award goes to three students! Valedictorian Ms. Whitney Grinnage-Cassidy, student scholar Mr. David Carr, and salutatorian Ms. Giavonna Lucas.  All three were incredibly accomplished graduates, and received multiple distinguished honors.
