Growth Deal 3 announcement

The Chancellor announced in the Autumn Statement that the South West has secured £191 million for economic development in the latest round of Growth Deal funding.  Details of how this Local Growth Fund will be allocated across Dorset and which projects have secured funding are expected shortly.

Lorna Carver, director of Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership said: “We are pleased that the South West region has been allocated £191 million for economic development.  Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership submitted a strong and ambitious business plan to accelerate economic growth, jobs and skills across Dorset.  We are now keen to understand from government how this regional figure will be broken down and which projects in Dorset have secured investment.”

Dorset Enterprise Zone
Dorset’s Enterprise Zone will open in April 2017, to encourage businesses to invest in commercial space at Dorset Green Technology Park. Enterprise Zones are part of the government’s long-term economic plan to support business and the creation of jobs by transferring the leadership of growth to local areas.

Business growth will be achieved in a number of ways which will include accelerating development of office space; position and market the Enterprise Zone as an important Advanced Engineering Cluster, building on strengths in marine, defence and energy and attract foreign direct investment.

National News
Metro-Dynamics, a consultancy for cities that drive growth. recently produced ‘Leading the way- a report to the LEP Network’. Metro-Dynamics state that 'this work provides a timely reminder that LEPs are making a significant impact. There is substantial international evidence that stronger local decision-making, across functioning economic areas, does positively influence local growth and improve the success of local places'.

'England’s LEPs are organisations that are business-led, operating extremely efficiently and able to think and act strategically to support their local economies. They are also working together to support national sectors and extract maximum local benefits from national infrastructure projects. More than this, LEPs are actively taking on issues that are outside the core remit of ‘infrastructure, skills and jobs’, and working closely with emerging mayoral authorities and existing local government leaders to ensure that growth and businesses are fully involved in efforts to strengthen local decision-making and take a more strategic approach to spending and investment'.
