Hello friends of Holly Hedge!

Spring is here and all our rescues are loving the warmer weather. The cats listen avidly to the birds chirping in the hedges, and all of the chalets have a view to outside so they are thoroughly entertained by the comings and goings of feathered families. Our dogs bound across the fields enjoying all the new smells that spring brings, and chasing the odd butterfly if one dances near by. We hasten to add that the butterflies seem wise to the chase and none have been caught yet!

You'll find some lovely animal stories in this newsletter and insights into Sanctuary life from over the last month. You'll see further down we have been offered another Newfoundland Water Rescue from the Newfound Friends Team! We are tentatively booking in events for from September onwards. 2020 was a devastating year for our charity and took so much from what we painstakingly rebuilt since our Paws in Peril appeal, so we are desperately hoping that our fundraising events can go ahead, with some adjustments to make them covid-safe.

We'd like to apologise that this newsletter is a little delayed,  we've had some issues with our website and wanted to ensure all the links would work in this email. However we hope that by the time this newsletter reaches you, you are enjoying a slow bank holiday and can read this in the garden with a cuppa.

We hope you all enjoy a lovely Easter Weekend - by some luck it looks like we will have some sunshine!

What do you call a collection of Georges?

We've had an interesting phenomenon recently... not one, not two, not even three... But four cats called George!
Would you call them a gaggle of Georges? A group? They're the Gorgeous Georges to us, each of them glorious in their own way.

Two of our Georges have caught the eyes of some lovely people and hopefully will be leaving us for their forever home very soon.

On the left of this text is George 4th, who is looking for his forever home. He loves a good fuss around his face and has beautiful markings. He and George 3rd will both be on the website in the next few days, so do check there if you'd like a Gorgeous George of your own!

Susie searches for her forever home

This beautiful Boxer X is Susie - or as we affectionately call her, Susie Q.

You might remember Susie and her mother, Lucy. Lucy had been abandoned with two of her puppies, who were just weeks old. We believed Lucy had delivered more puppies and with the help of social media we found that she had had six puppies who had been sold at just five weeks old. We managed to reunite Lucy with two more of her puppies so she could give them the best start to life possible, and rehomed them when they were ready. Susie was one of those pups who we watched grow  big and strong after a sad start to life, and unfortunately she has been returned to us as her owner's health unexpectedly declined. Though they were heartbroken to part from her, they knew Susie needed more than they were able to give, and her reactivity was difficult to manage.

Whilst Susie is reactive with other dogs, she has oodles of love for people and she will make someone the most incredible companion. She likes to help in the kitchen, have a cuddle and offer a delicate paw... and she has a quick mind and loves learning new tricks! She loves people and we know she would be happy in a family with older teenagers, but she will need someone strong to walk her, true to her breed she's a big girl! Her new forever home will be with someone who has experience of having a dog like her who can continue to work on her reactivity, with land or quiet spaces nearby for her daily walks.

Princess, Dolly & Elliot need a home!

Your eyes do not deceive you... these are Sphynx cats! These three are called Princess, Dolly and Elliot, and as a bonded trio we are looking for a home for them together.

Following the breakdown of a relationship their owner found they could not cope, and brought them to us knowing we would find them the forever home they deserve. When they first arrived they all needed some TLC, they were overdue a bath and had ear infections, so we got that sorted and found them a foster home where they are currently staying.
Sphnx cats are strange and beautiful creatures, and are known for being incredibly affectionate and high maintenence. They crave human interaction and will shout loudly for what they want until you give into them or distract them with play. Their skin is very oily and picks up dirt from anywhere and everywhere, so they need a bath once a week to stop them from getting skin infections and feline acne.

They had a home lined up but unfortunately it has fallen through, so we are once again looking for the right home for these three. Sphynx cats are very different from your regular cat, and to ensure their lengthy needs are met we are looking for someone with experience of having them previously.

We love to recycle!

Have you been working from home and printing too? If you use HP or Canon cartridges, please hang on to them until April 12th and bring them in to our reception. We have a box set up in our new extension which when full, we can send off and receive funds in return. So as well as being green, our rescues will benefit too!

Make a splash for rescues!

That's right...The Newfoundland Water Rescue is back! We're looking for heroes to make a splash for our animals in need!
Would you jump into the Marina to be rescued by a 200lb, web-toed gentle giant to make a better life for our rescues?
You can make a real difference by doing something exhilarating! With our events cancelled last year our fundraising took a huge hit, we are looking for superheroes to take on the challenge of a lifetime in the name of voiceless animals. Every penny raised will give vital care to a dog or cat who needs a second chance.

Join us and the wonderful team from Newfound Friends 18 September at Portishead Marina for what is always an incredible day. Whether you're an avid supporter, want a rush of adrenaline to blow the cobwebs of last year away, or just to watch, don’t miss this brilliant event that saves lives.

Just 21 out of 30 spaces remain, so drop Hannah an email on fundraising@hollyhedge.org.uk if you would like to be one of our 2021 heroes!

Newbie Lucy enjoys a play in the sun!

Lucy has just arrived at Holly Hedge, and we always ensure our rescues are extra spoiled during their first few days, to ensure they are as happy as they can be. For Lucy this meant lots of playing in the meadow, and showing us her favourite scent... you may be able to see from the photo what that is!

Unfortunately for Lucy this also meant bathtime!

If you are interested in Lucy please do not get in touch with our rehoming team yet, as she needs to see our vet next week and our behaviourist needs to assess her. Our rehoming team is exceptionally busy at the moment with lots of calls from people looking to surrender their pets as they go back to work, and looking for homes for the 90+ dogs and cats in our care. We have 2-3 reception staff each day, and they frequently receive calls from people who give us a limited window to help their pet, sometimes threatening euthanasia. They do a wonderful job but are very stretched, so however keen you are to adopt Lucy, please keep this in mind. When Lucy is ready for her new home she will go on our website, so please keep an eye out for her there. Thank you.
