OUR WONDERFUL PATRON AND BBC PRESENTER MONTY HALLS AND HIS FAMILY JOIN US FOR OUR OFFICIAL KENNEL LAUNCH

Our previous kennels were extremely dilapidated, crumbling and over 30 years old. The new state of the art kennels definitely have the seal of approval, and our rescues are far cosier and more relaxed. The three long stay rooms with their own little fenced in area are a great success too, and the dogs in there seem far more content, enjoying their home comforts, especially their sofas and armchairs. There are also six large gardens, incorporating a sensory garden so our dogs can enjoy recreational time away from the kennels as well as walks in the woods.

Patron Monty Halls came to Holly Hedge years ago and found his best friend “Reuben”, who accompanied him in his TV adventures  in the BBC’s “Great Escape” series.  Sadly his beloved companion passed away earlier this year, but Monty’s commitment to Holly Hedge as their patron remains undimmed and he kindly joined us to celebrate and cut the red tape.

In cutting the ribbon on Saturday 1st July, Monty said “without Holly Hedge there would have been no Reuben.  Without Holly Hedge many other beautiful dogs and cats would have gone to an early grave”.   He praised its founder. Pauline Leeson, and all the many staff and volunteers who give their lives to these beautiful creatures.  “It is an extraordinary place run by extraordinary people”, he added.

“Holly Hedge never puts a healthy animal to sleep.  Some animals stay with them for years before they find a permanent home.  It’s the sanctuary that never gives up on a dog or cat.  This independent charity receives no funding from government or the National Lottery and depends on the generosity and goodwill of its many supporters.”

Junior has come to us after spending several years living on the streets with his owner sleeping in door ways. At only 5 years old, the wear and tear of his previous life is now showing and sadly due to his breed and giant size he suffers with the common issue of Hip & Elbow Dysplasia. Although this doesn't affect his larger than life character, it is a painful condition if left untreated. Pain relief is only a short term answer as it can leave a lasting affect on his internal organs, hence our appeal to send Junior for courses of Hydro  Therapy which has many proven benefits including:

· Relief from pain, swelling and stiffness.

· Non weight bearing exercise.

· Promotion of relaxation.

· Joint mobilisation.

· Cardiovascular fitness (heart and lungs)

· Muscle strengthening, maintenance & restoration.

· Increase in range of motion of affected joints.

· Improved circulation.

To help ease painful joints whilst avoiding medication, especially at such a young age would be so beneficial. The improved mobility may also improve his chance of finding a new home, as all he really wants is someone who has owned similar large dogs before who can understand his needs and provide plenty of company and some nice relaxing walks. Please can you help this lovable gentle giant who loves to give big sloppy kisses to enjoy the rest of his life free from the pain he has endured so stoically for so long. With your invaluable support we can ensure Junior will have a new lease of life and a future to look forward to. Thank you so much in advance.

DOG RESIDENT OF THE MONTH - Jet & Karla

Karla & Jet are two loving, large lap dogs, who like to put paws on shoulders and give you a cuddle! Don’t be put off by having two together as they are easy to walk, particularly in the woods and the outdoors, plus they love to spoon on their sofa and laze around most of the day. Sadly being kenneled for most of their life they will need to adapt to indoor living and learning house etiquette, although when out with volunteers in their home, they behaved exceptionally well, preferring a snooze on the couch than getting into mischief. A rural setting would suit them well, but they may chase small furries! With plenty of company and an easy going lifestyle these two will fit in easily into most homes.

Cheeky Chops is a lovely boy who really lives up to his name! He has a lovely character and loves nothing more than snoozing next to his radiator! He had been straying for a while before being brought to us. This little fella likes a gentle fuss to be made of him. Please ask to meet our cheeky boy!!
