Hemant Mehta
The Friendly Atheist

Hemant is the editor of, appears on the Atheist Voice channel on YouTube, and co-hosts the (uniquely-named) Friendly Atheist Podcast. He is a former National Board Certified high school math teacher in the suburbs of Chicago, where he taught for seven years.

He has been featured on CNN, FOX News, and in the Wall Street Journal, and served on the board of directors for Foundation Beyond Belief and the Secular Student Alliance.

Monica Miller
Attorney, American Humanist Association

Monica is Legal Director and Senior Counsel at the AHA’s Appignani Humanist Legal Center and Executive Director of the Humanist Legal Society.

Ms. Miller has vigorously defended the constitutional mandate of separation of church and state, serving as lead counsel in over 25 federal cases.She has appeared live on Fox News and MSNBC and is regularly quoted by national and local media outlets throughout the country.

Debbie Goddard
Vice President, American Atheists

Debbie has over two decades of experience as an organizer and activist. She became involved with the secular movement as a college student in 2000 and attended atheist, freethinker, humanist, and skeptic group meetings in Philadelphia, New York City, New Jersey, and central Pennsylvania.

Prior to joining American Atheists, Debbie served Outreach Director for the Center for Inquiry and was the lead organizer for the Women in Secularism 4 conference and the annual CFI Leadership Conference.

Sarah Gillooly
Vice President for State Outreach and Engagement, Americans United

Sarah works every day to build the power of AU’s members and supporters to protect religious freedom for all Americans. As a Quaker and a queer, non-binary, white co-conspirator from the South, Sarah knows that their liberation is bound up with yours.

Sarah has served as the Director of Political Strategy & Advocacy at the ACLU of North Carolina and with Planned Parenthood for 10 years at the state and national levels.

Victoria de la Torre
Secular Celebrant

Victoria is a Secular celebrant from the San Diego area of Southern California. She received her Bachelors in Philosophy from the University of San Diego, and has been a part of the Secular community since 2009.

In past years, Victoria has served as Community Outreach Organizer of the Humanist Association of San Diego and received the 2014 Humanist of The Year Award at the Secular Conference of Southern California for her work with the homeless. She is also an advocate for Latino issues and outreach.

We are thrilled to have Victoria as our emcee.

California Freethought Day is more than just a festival that celebrates freethought, civic engagement, science, social justice, and the separation of church and state.

In addition to the main event on Sunday, we hope you can also join us for our Supporters' Reception on Saturday evening. This is the best way to support our event.

Supporters' Reception

Groups, families, and individuals will want to join us for a very special reception on Saturday, October 12, from 7 to 10:00 PM, at the Holiday Inn near Cal Expo (next door to our chosen hotel for lodging).

The fundraising reception will feature an open bar of selected beer, wine, and other beverages, appetizers, snacks, and desserts, and the first opportunity to meet many of our speakers. Guests will enjoy live entertainment and exclusive gifts.
