Tom Groover has an INCREDIBLE conversation with grassroots activists Markie Miller and Will Falk about recognizing and protecting the Rights of Nature through local law-making as a legal solution to a fixed governmental/corporate state system. This fixed system places corporate privilege to pillage and pollute over the rights of nature to flourish.

Markie Miller: Protecting Lake Erie’s Right to Exist with the Lake Erie Bill of Rights (LEBOR)

Suspended Algae in Lake Erie, Ohio

Markie Miller is a volunteer organizer with Toledoans for Safe Water, a Board member of the Ohio Community Rights Network (OHCRN) and a National Community Rights Network (NCRN) Board member. Toledoans for Safe Water is circulating the Lake Erie Bill of Rights (LEBOR) initiative petition that recognizes and codifies the rights of Lake Erie to flourish. After Toledo and the surrounding region lived with no drinking water for three days in 2014, in addition to decades of policy problems and pollution, Toledoans and others are now “recognizing the rights that have been ignored for way too long”…

Water from Lake Erie Ohio: A System Out of Balance

Markie and her group realize their dependence on Lake Erie and understand that Lake Erie is not just there to provide drinking water to humans or other human-centered activities. Lake Erie has a right to exist and their community has the moral obligation (duty) to protect that right. “We’ve witnessed our own vulnerability.” Markie impels us to “Be the voice.”

Will Falk:
Respect Existence or Expect Resistance
|
|
Will Falk is a member of Deep Green Resistance (deepgreenresistance.org). This organization “recognizes that all life depends on clean water, breathable air, healthy soil, a habitable climate and countless relationships of complex communities and living beings living in these communities for life. And we believe that individual and social morality must emerge from a humble relationship and a humble understanding that human life and that all life depends on all these non-human others.”
|
|
With regard to the destruction of nature and violations against nature’s rights and people’s rights, Will states that “people that have their hearts broken and their hopes broken can be catalyzed into more serious forms of resistance…”
Will was involved in the Colorado River vs. Colorado lawsuit and has done two recent interviews about this issue with Tom Groover.
“We are the ones you have been waiting for.” ~June Jordan

Please consider donating to support our work. NCRN is a 501c3, volunteer non-profit educational organization requiring your financial help building the national, state and local Nature and Community Rights Movement. We are a grassroots, unpaid, volunteer Board working to connect State Community Rights Networks with each other and to help educate and activate people across the country about the Nature and Community Rights Movement. We are active members of local groups and Board members of our State Community Rights Networks. With your help, we can continue to send newsletters, maintain our website, host webinars and help community rights groups with local community citizen journalism to get stories out that mainstream media is not covering.
