May 2017

Last month, three of us enjoyed a half-day Saturday morning retreat; it was a deep quiet time of practice. The theme of my talk was Awakened Conduct.

The theme of our next half-day, June 4, will be “Buddha and the Bard.” Joseph will give a brief dharma talk and Dave Richo--writer, therapist, Zen practitioner, and lover and teacher of poetry--will read his favorite passages from Shakespeare. Please join us for this unique retreat illustrating connections between poetry and everyday life. There will also be an opportunity for dokusan with Joseph.

Zen experience is ineffable and immeasurable. It is unfathomable using cognition solely. Yet it is expressed in quite ordinary moments. Buddha is calling but our line is busy. Poetry can present Zen,

Vividly clear, vividly clear, manifesting itself.
The mountains, river, the great earth, the uncovered source
There are the flowers, there is the moon—who is the Master!
Spring, Autumn, Winter and Summer compete with new garb.

Most of us know Dukkha, the first of the Four Noble Truths, “There is suffering.” But here, old ancestor Yasutani is presenting Nirvana, uncovered, “There are the flowers, there is the moon.”

Deep Streams is experimenting with a less frequent and somewhat more intensive monthly format. Please join us as we awaken to our extraordinary ordinary nature.
