We are walking drums
We are walking drums.
We walk in accordance to our own inner rhythm...
For some, it is the pace of their heart-beat.
For others, their rhythm is dictated by the outside world.
Some Souls march to the beat of their own drum.
And some, match the rhythm of the Earth Mother.
This lends me to some Food for Thought...
Food for Thought...
Take a moment, close your eyes and focus soley on your Heart-beat.
~: When was the last time you did this?
~: Could you hear the rhythm? Could you feel the rhythm?
~: How did it make you feel?
~: Whose rhythm is it?
~: Are you leading the band, or are you following the cues of others?
~: How fast is your rhythm? Are you happy with your tempo?
~: Can you dance to it?
~: If you were to tap your toes to your rhythm, what effect would it have on others?
~: Can you sit still?
~: Are you more captivated by the beat or the silence in your rhythm?
~: How does your breathing mesh with your rhythm? What role does your breath play in the music of you?
~: What is your pulse rate when you rest?
~: When was the last time you simply sat quietly at the beach or on the edge of a river or even in the stillness of a darkened room by yourself?
~: How is your sense of rhythm?
We live in a world that is driven by constant rhythm. For some, it is a fast and frentic rhythm filled with an incessent pattern of flurried beats that crowd the mind and bring in restlessness.
For others, their rhythm is slow and steady, aligned to the time signature of the Great Mystery.
For some, they are wired for speed and unbalanced nerves that produce the rhythm of the sleepless hummingbird.
Rhythm is Life.
Therefore, strive for Balance. See what happens if you slow down your Inner Rhythm. Observe what happens to your outside world as you do this. Watch how you can effect others with this simple observation.
Our Way of BEing found in the Shamanic Teachings that we share consider the Principle of Cause and Effect. In addition, we teach and lead by example.
So by looking inward to your inner drummer, you can bring change to a frenzied world.
This is Shamanism approached in a Good Way.

From the Storyteller
My First Journey with a drum by Paul
When I was taught how to Journey, the Shaman played a drum. I was not prepared (sound wise) for what I was about to experience.
A bit of personal history is in order...
First, I am a musician. I've been involved with musical instruments since I was a child and I'm pretty much, self-taught. When I was 17, I picked up the guitar, learned to tune it, played along with records and built up quiet the ear.
About a year before this, I was deeply involved with competitive cycling. By the time I was 18, I was riding in Olympic Development events aiming for, the Olympics that the USA banned in Moscow.
Anyway, my conditioning then gave me a resting heart rate of 38 b.p.m. What this did for me musically, is it made slow music very natural for me and when I would compose or play, my music would (and is) very melodic, meditative and mellow.
Bounce forward in time...and I'm sitting, ready for my first Journey.
BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM!
My personal rhythm (if I were to just tap on a table top with my eyes closed) is around 45 beats per minute.
This certainly is NOT the Shamanic Beat!
Named The Eagle's Heartbeat, the Shamanic beat runs between 3 and 7 beats...per second! That is 180-420 beats per minute!
Initially, I thought, "There's no way this is going to put me in a trance!"
Happily, I can tell you that it did. And it did it very quickly too!
So why so fast?
It has been found that this tempo induces the mind into the elusive and mysterious Theta state where brain activity slows almost to the point of sleep. Theta is the brain state where magic happens in the crucible of your own neurological activity. It brings forward heightened receptivity, flashes of dreamlike imagery, inspiration, and your long-forgotten memories. Theta can bring you deep states of meditation and a sensation of "floating." Because Theta is an expansive state, you may feel your mind expand beyond the boundaries of your body.
Now when I drum, I want to hop right into the 180-240 beat per minute pattern! Once it gets into your soul...oh boy!
I journey daily as part of my Shamanism and I'm grateful for the Eagles Heartbeat!
Students who join us in our Foundations of Shamanic Practices workshop, receive three recordings of Neelam and I drumming so you can easily journey in the same manner that we do in our workshops.
