'Supporting volunteering and the voluntary and community sector in the Forest of Dean'
Out and about with FVAF
You may have been one of the very many people that have seen us out and about or even spoke to us over the last couple of months. We've been at Forest Showcase, the local Co-ops and generally out in the Forest communities talking about volunteering, our new exciting projects such as Walking with Wheels, and finding out what matters to people in the area.
One man told us about how he was suffering from depression and had very little self-worth before getting involved with the Dean Green Team. He now says he feels like a 'real forester' for the first time since moving here more than 30 years ago.
We believe it's opportunities like this where people can come together and take part in meaningful activities that form the foundations of the caring, healthy, interdependent society that we can all benefit from.
Thanks to extensive support from eComplete we have been able to launch our brand new website. Why not visit us at and find out more about what we're up to...
FVAF Training Programme

FVAF would like to thank everyone who completed our recent 'training need survey'.

In response to these findings we have worked extremely hard to create an extensive training programme to meet as many of these needs as possible.

Thanks to the Forest of Dean District Council for subsidising certain courses and the fact that we are a not-for-profit organisation we are able to offer our courses at unbeatable prices. All of our trainers are fully qualified and experienced in their fields and all courses have a 100% satisfaction rate.

Whilst the finished programme will contain in excess of 30 courses over the next 9 months you can download the current version below.

The Heritage Ability project, delivered by charity Living Options Devon and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund has a clear vision - to break down barriers to accessing heritage places and unlocking the South West for everybody to enjoy. Over the next three years, the Heritage Ability team will support a variety of unique places across the South West to help them improve the experience for disabled and Deaf visitors. From the West tip of Cornwall all the way to Gloucestershire, the team will work with over 19 sites to deliver accessible interpretation, from BSL (British Sign Language) clips, to visual stories and easy read documents. Many sites will also benefit from an all-terrain scooter or ‘Tramper’, which will enable people with limited mobility to access the countryside like never before.

The Forest of Dean is excited to be in the project, with organisations such as Forest Voluntary Action Forum and specific initiatives such as Forester’s Forest looking at how they can improve accessibility information on their website and access across some of their projects.

As part of the project, Heritage Ability are looking for disabled and Deaf volunteers with a passion for heritage to help spread the word, become advocates for the project and help their sites on their ongoing journey. They also need your help to conduct some mystery visits at the sites and provide feedback which the team can use to help the sites improve. If you’d like to be involved, take a look at the website at You can email the team at or call 01392 459222.

Forest of Dean Crossroads-Drivers

Forest of Dean Crossroads require drivers to transport people to and from centres in Cinderford and Lydney, with flexible hours weekly/monthly, expenses paid. They are seeking reliable individuals with a full, clean driving license and access to their own vehicle to assist in their services.

Fair Shares-Coffee Morning Helpers

Fair Shares (Newent branch) is looking for help making hot drinks on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for their weekly coffee mornings in the village, in which around 20 Fair Shares members attend. This is a sociable volunteering role which requires individuals to be available between the hours of 9:30am and 12pm weekly or whenever possible.

Forest Fitness Centre-Fitness Buddy

Heywood campus in Cinderford is looking for volunteers to welcome and encourage new users of the Fitness Centre, many of which are elderly or have a physical disability. This opportunity does not require people with fitness qualifications or skills, just those with a friendly nature who are willing to lend a helping hand.

Here are just some of the many volunteering opportunities available through FVAF and
