A Message from our Stated Clerk

Dear Presbytery Friends,

To say this year has been different from any which any of us have experienced would be quite an understatement. Our communities of faith have found safe ways to continue their ministries and respond to their communities needs. It has been an honor to have a front row seat to watch the energy, intelligence, imagination and love you all have poured into compassionate and faithful response to this pandemic.

As we begin to see hope on the horizon I want to take this opportunity to share some resources which might be helpful as you seek to make decisions about reemerging to in person meetings, and to call to mind some of the values I hope will undergird you in your decision making.

The Apostle Paul reminds us in First Corinthians 12 that for us as the Body of Christ, the parts of the body we perceive as weaker are “indispensable” so as we make decisions we need to keep in mind the needs of the most vulnerable amongst us, and proceed at the pace which is safe for our siblings in Christ whom we believe indispensable. I commend 1 Corinthians 12 to you as a framework to begin with as you consider the theological implications of these important decisions.

Second, from a science point of view it has been our advice in the presbyteries I was serving in the fall that we want to see 2 conditions objective data conditions met, that the scores on the NJ CALI and COVIDACTNOW.ORG for your county were both orange or lower on their risk assessment scales. As I type this on Tuesday morning, the counties making up our presbytery, except for passaic which is still red on the covid act now, meet this criteria for the first time since mid fall.

Our Mid-Council colleague Ruling Elder Dr. Lisa Allgood is the leader of Cincinnati presbytery in Ohio and she recently facilitated a webinar which is very informative for sessions as they have conversations about decision making. She brings a unique perspective as a second career presbytery leader who is also a PhD immunologist, Her webinar along with the associated reference materials can be found here.

As we navigate this season together, I am happy to be a conversation partner for anyone as you seek to frame discussions, and I’m sure that once he is fully on board in June Steve will be willing to be a sounding board also.

In peace,
Jeremy

The Nominating report will be posted following their meeting on Wednesday afternoon. The COM report following their meeting on Thursday evening. Thank you for your patience as we settle into the beginnings of a rhythm of presbytery life together.

We have also included with the Packet for reference, the document produced by the first working group of the synod titled “An Invitation to Participate in New Jersey New Missional Communities - February 2019.” This document which was approved by the then seven presbyteries of New Jersey, lays out on pages 4-8 a vision for what the new presbyteries will be… Our work over the next season of our life together will be to that vision, and develop our sense of what it means to implement the vision here in this very specific context of Northeast New Jersey, and how to do so bearing in mind the missional values we hold in common, with an eye on the denominations Matthew 25 vision. We will learn more about the Matthew 25 vision and initiate at the presbytery meeting. You won’t want to miss this exciting opportunity!

COMMUNITY MINISTRY

Open Hands and
Open Hearts for Service

During these unprecedented times, our church buildings may have been closed, and worship has taken a different form since we now engage in virtual and digital forms of worship at a distance. However, our hearts and our hands have remained open to serve and to do the work of The Lord in these difficult times. Read more about the mission projects from some of our congregations which have continued throughout this period of changes and challenges in the communities we serve.  From Maria Santa (Iglesia Presbiteriana Hispana/Warren Point)

El Centro Hispano American

In early May, El Centro Hispano American in Plainfield cooperated with Horizon Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Rite Aid Pharmacy to provide 700 Pfizer vaccines for clients and friends in the Plainfield area. The vaccination site was the Crescent Ave. Presbyterian Church. Twenty five volunteers from El Centro, Horizon and Crescent guided the clients through the process. We were able to vaccinate young people over 16 and many of them were required to be vaccinated by their schools.

El Centro also continues to provide subsidies of $420 per applicant for immigrants who hold green cards and can apply for Naturalization. ESL and Citizenship classes further support this effort. Thirty new citizens have come through this process in the last few months.

Contact El Centro at 908-753-8730. El Centro has been a mission project of the former Elizabeth Presbytery and many churches.

CASA Gift Card Drive

Last year more than 1,500 children were placed in foster care in Essex County alone. These children, ranging in age from birth to 21 years old, were removed from their homes as a result of abuse, abandonment or neglect. CASA of Essex County (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children) promotes the welfare of these children by providing a safety net of support, advocacy and mentorship. One of the areas where there is a great need of support is amongst the youth ages 16+. At this age, they are often learning to live on their own. To address this need, the Community Ministries Team is partnering with CASA Essex County to sponsor a gift card drive for foster youth in our local area. Gift cards would help fill the gaps to purchase necessities such as food, clothing and personal items.

RESOURCES

Creating More Ways to
Engage with the Advocate

May 2, 2021

As religious educators and learners it is important that we present information and receive information in a way that best suits our ability to offer and receive the information. We have steadied ourselves to embrace the necessary shift from an in-person learning experience to a virtual learning experience while trying to maintain the integrity of the lessons and our commitment as educators. As we lean more comfortably into virtual learning we recognize the need to continue to promote the Universal Design of Learning (UDL).
