Vigil to End Human Detention Camps in the U.S.

Over the past week, horrific reports and images have brought to our attention the realities faced by refugees detained at border camps. The reports of children dying after being denied medical care and basic human rights has moved from a political agenda to a moral and ethical crisis.

With thanks to Rev. Caroline Unzaga (Wyoming) for sharing the following event with me, I now share it with you. Who wants to go?

On Friday July 12th, 2019, Lights for Liberty: A Vigil to End Human Detention Camps, will bring thousands of people to locations worldwide as well as to detention camps across country, into the streets and into their own front yards, to protest the inhumane conditions faced by refugees.

Ordering PC(USA) Planning Calendars and Books of Order

If you are not already receiving a 2019-2020 PC(USA) Planning Calendar from the PC(USA) store, and would like to purchase one through the Presbytery, we will be ordering some. Please fill out the order form on our publications page. The calendars will be available at the end of August, or beginning of September, so the September 14 presbytery meeting is a great time to plan to pay and/or pick up your copies! The calendars will be $8.50 each, and we are requesting that you pay for your calendars before you pick them up or we ship them to you.

If you will not be at the September presbytery meeting, please send your payment to the office. If you would like your calendar(s) to be shipped, please include shipping in the check. (Shipping costs are approximately $2.50/calendar or $7.25 for 3 calendars.)

We also have 50 copies of the 2019-2021 Book of Order available for purchase. They are also $8.50/each (+shipping). You may also pick these up in the office. If you would like a copy, please email our office to arrange the details. Thank you!
Important update to Child Protection Policy

It has come to our attention that the information about the agency to call for abuse and neglect is incorrect in our presbytery child protection policy. The agency and telephone numbers listed are for Essex county in New York and not NJ.

The correct agency name is Department of Permanency and Child Protection (DCP&P) and the telephone number is (877) 652-2874 which is the statewide child abuse hotline number.

We will get an updated, approved copy of the policy up on the website as soon as possible, but please update any copies you have. Thank you!
Thank You! An Update

We wanted to clarify that the concerts held to support he Puerto Rico Mission Trip, at Central Presbyterian Church, Montclair, and the Taiwanese Church of North Jersey raised $2345 (this is a correction from the last newsletter) to support our trip. Thank you again to everyone who donated directly or hosted or attended one of our concerts!

From Presbyterian Outlook:
Milestones and Moments

Sitting beside my daughter, a senior in high school, in a darkened theatre in Charleston, South Carolina, I heard the author of “Wonder” say that writing the book helped her learn “to focus less on milestones and more on moments.” Her sentiment struck me enough that I wrote down her thought. Moments make up a life, I think she added. Milestones do, too, I would argue. Reflecting on my son’s recent graduation from college...I realize that milestones conjure moments vivid, lovely and cherished. Milestones and moments often come in tandem, comingled, unable to be extricated one from another. [Read More]
