Message from our Presbytery Co-Leaders
Dear Presbytery Friends,
As we continue the process of becoming a new presbytery together, there are lots of things going on!
I want to remind and invite you all of the Presbytery-wide Zoom gathering, which happens every Tuesday at 1PM, and the Presbytery Pastors Check-in, which happens on Thursdays at 10:30AM. Please feel free to join us when you are able!
Tuesdays (open to all) – Click to Join
Thursdays (open to pastors) – Click to Join
Some highlights of recent work in the presbytery include:
Your Commission on Preparation for Ministry meets on the last Tuesday evening of each month. At their meeting on May 25, they took the following action on behalf of the presbytery: they met with candidate Hector Herrera, certified him ready to receive a call, and granted permission for him to circulate a PIF and negotiate for pastoral services. We anticipate examining him for ordination at the special meeting of the presbytery on August 4th if the way be clear. They also approved an internship site for a candidate under their care.
Your Commission on Ministry meets each month on the first Thursday. At the meeting on June 3rd, they took the following actions on behalf of the presbytery:
  • Met with members of the Springfield Church and approved the Ministry Information Form for their search for a designated associate pastor for community outreach.
  • Met with members of the Associate Pastor for Children Youth and Family Ministries and their candidate, found the call in order, and sustained examination of the candidate for membership in the presbytery, if the way be clear pending a congregational meeting scheduled for June 27th 2021.
  • Validated the ministry of Candidate Hector Herrera at the Tokyo Union Church if the way be clear pending his examination for ordination at the August 4th special presbytery meeting.
  • Appointed moderators of sessions as needed and reviewed churches in transition.
The Commission on Ministry reviewed the process for pastoral transitions as a training time during this meeting and is looking forward to receiving training on the role of the COM liaison and on structuring terms of call and benefits offerings through the Board of Pensions at upcoming meetings.
In Peace,
Jeremy T. Campbell

A Plea For Housing Aid

An Eviction Moratorium kept families safely housed and stable during the pandemic but the moratorium is coming to an end. The rent is coming due and that will create difficulty and potential crises for those who cannot catch up without assistance. Families will need help paying their back rent.

There are many agencies in our Presbytery that shelter and support the working families who will be impacted by the end to the moratorium. The presbytery encourages sessions to reach out to local organizations to see how you can assist those navigating this difficult transition.

During these unprecedented times, our church buildings may have been closed, and worship has taken a different form since we now engage in virtual and digital forms of worship at a distance. However, our hearts and our hands have remained open to serve and to do the work of The Lord in these difficult times. Read more about the mission projects from some of our congregations which have continued throughout this period of changes and challenges in the communities we serve.  From Maria Santa (Iglesia Presbiteriana Hispana/Warren Point)

CASA Gift Card Drive

Last year more than 1,500 children were placed in foster care in Essex County alone. These children, ranging in age from birth to 21 years old, were removed from their homes as a result of abuse, abandonment or neglect. CASA of Essex County (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children) promotes the welfare of these children by providing a safety net of support, advocacy and mentorship. One of the areas where there is a great need of support is amongst the youth ages 16+. At this age, they are often learning to live on their own. To address this need, the Community Ministries Team is partnering with CASA Essex County to sponsor a gift card drive for foster youth in our local area. Gift cards would help fill the gaps to purchase necessities such as food, clothing and personal items.
