Message from our Presbytery Co-Leaders

Dear Presbytery Friends,

We hope you had a good holiday weekend!

First and foremost, please join me in officially welcoming the Rev. Steve Huston to the staff as he officially began his new role as Co-Presbytery Leader/Resource Presbyter yesterday! He can be reached at shuston@pnenj.org.

Steve joins the Rev. Jeremy Campbell (Co-Presbytery Leader/Stated Clerk), Cindy Cummings (Bookkeeper), Trudi Folkes (Communications Coordinator), Liz Hathaway (Office Manager), Paul Karoyan (Treasurer), Elder Jerome Lane, Jr. (Community Ministries Coordinator), the Rev. Patricia Pastas (Coordinator of Latino Ministries), and the Rev. Gloria Tate (Coordinator of African American Ministries).

Our staff can currently be contacted via email at the following addresses:

  • Jeremy - jtcampbell@pnenj.org
  • Jerome - jerome@pnenj.org
  • Liz - office@pnenj.org
  • Cindy, Trudi, Paul, Patricia, and Gloria - Please contact Liz at office@pnenj.org, who will get the message to them.

As Steve joins us, we also celebrate Elder Warren McNeill who will be concluding his work with us over the next couple of weeks. We are grateful for his long service to the Presbytery of Newark and for his invaluable role in supporting the transition and the beginning of the Presbytery of Northeast New Jersey.

We know that recent changes in the requirements of both the state government as well the CDC are on the minds of everyone in churches. The COVID response team of Newark Presbytery was to meet in June to update their guidance … So look forward to that guidance coming soon! Also if there are folks from congregations formerly in Elizabeth Presbytery or Palisades Presbytery who have relevant experience and expertise, please let Jeremy and Steve know; we’d be happy to supplement the Newark Team.

In the meantime, here are some links to information from other colleagues near and far which might be helpful in having a conversation with your session about how you’d like to proceed. Steve and Jeremy are both always willing to be conversation partners for sessions or pastors as you all seek to make faithful decisions in this context, and we encourage you to remember that for most children, vaccination is not yet available, and that visitors are also an important consideration as you make your decisions.

Dr. Lisa Allgood, the presbytery leader of Cincinnati Presbytery, has offered this link which contains information about singing based on research done at the University of Colorado and the University of Maryland.

Here is one of Dr. Allgood’s recent Blog posts.

Some helpful guidance from the Wisconsin Council of Churches

Here are some links to advice from our neighbors the Presbytery of the Highlands of New Jersey

Here is a link to the actual guidance from the CDC for people who are fully vaccinated.

We look forward to continuing to partner with you all in ministry and mission!

In peace,

Jeremy T. Campbell

Open Hands and
Open Hearts for Service

During these unprecedented times, our church buildings may have been closed, and worship has taken a different form since we now engage in virtual and digital forms of worship at a distance. However, our hearts and our hands have remained open to serve and to do the work of The Lord in these difficult times. Read more about the mission projects from some of our congregations which have continued throughout this period of changes and challenges in the communities we serve.  From Maria Santa (Iglesia Presbiteriana Hispana/Warren Point)

El Centro Hispano American

In early May, El Centro Hispano American in Plainfield cooperated with Horizon Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Rite Aid Pharmacy to provide 700 Pfizer vaccines for clients and friends in the Plainfield area. The vaccination site was the Crescent Ave. Presbyterian Church. Twenty five volunteers from El Centro, Horizon and Crescent guided the clients through the process. We were able to vaccinate young people over 16 and many of them were required to be vaccinated by their schools.

El Centro also continues to provide subsidies of $420 per applicant for immigrants who hold green cards and can apply for Naturalization. ESL and Citizenship classes further support this effort. Thirty new citizens have come through this process in the last few months.

Contact El Centro at 908-753-8730. El Centro has been a mission project of the former Elizabeth Presbytery and many churches.

CASA Gift Card Drive

Last year more than 1,500 children were placed in foster care in Essex County alone. These children, ranging in age from birth to 21 years old, were removed from their homes as a result of abuse, abandonment or neglect. CASA of Essex County (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children) promotes the welfare of these children by providing a safety net of support, advocacy and mentorship. One of the areas where there is a great need of support is amongst the youth ages 16+. At this age, they are often learning to live on their own. To address this need, the Community Ministries Team is partnering with CASA Essex County to sponsor a gift card drive for foster youth in our local area. Gift cards would help fill the gaps to purchase necessities such as food, clothing and personal items.

Click here to contribute to this cause. (Checks may also be mailed to the Presbytery Office - please email hello@newarkpresbytery.org to let us know to expect the donation.)
