FEMA Grant Opportunity

One of the few FEMA grant programs that your congregations may be eligible for is the Nonprofit Security Grant Program, or NSGP. Last year, at least five PCUSA churches successfully applied for this grant.

The main purpose of the grant program is to support “target hardening” and other physical security enhancements. For example, surveillance systems, physical access control equipment, impact resistant doors and gates, intrusion detection sensor and alarms, exterior lighting, physical perimeter security (gates, fences, jersey barriers), and screening and inspection equipment.

The program is also to promote emergency preparedness coordination and collaboration between public and private community representatives. Examples of this includes developing security plans, training for congregants and ushers, and contracting security personnel.

Long ago, when the church was the center of the community so was the church cemetery.  Today many of our congregations have old historic  active cemeteries that need lawncare, landscaping, monument  and structure maintenance.

Got Questions? Information Confusing?

What do we do about our cemeteries moving into the future? What is required by New Jersey State Law? What are the rules and laws about cemetery funds and bequests? Should there be a cemetery association or a congregational committee? What should be our policy? Can we change our outdated policy?

Come to one of the Cemetery Workshops to find answers to your questions.

This summer at the PAM Worship and Music Conferences at Montreat, we will be offering a Confirmation course for middler youth (entering or exiting 8th grade) and their mentors to prepare them for Confirmation at their home churches. This course, offered during the second week of the conference, will utilize the Big God, Big Questions curriculum from Presbyterian Publishing Corporation. In addition, the leader of the course, Rev. Meg Rift, is one of the curriculum writers.

This course can be beneficial to youth from churches of any size that may not have a large number of confirmands this year. For more information about the program, please visit our website: www.presbymusic.org/confirmation-course. We have scholarship money available as well!

Thanks to a generous grant from the Central Mission Endowment Fund of St. Philip Presbyterian Church in Houston, PAM is delighted to offer more scholarships for our 2020 Worship and Music Conferences at Montreat. These St. Philip/CMEF Scholarships are available to large groups, small groups, and individuals too! In addition to the conference registration fee, these scholarships can cover lodging, meals, and – for large groups – even travel costs! Blessed Tomorrow: Caring for Creation Today

Are you, or is your faith community growing more concerned about climate change?  How do you as a church leader help people make the connections between faith and climate? How well-equipped do you feel to speak about the spectrum of solutions? About opportunities to act and advocate? Are you looking for cost effective ways to decrease the carbon footprint of your church?

Rev. Ruth Boling and Dr. Carlos Monteagudo, from Bloomfield Presbyterian Church on the Green, have recently been trained and certified as Blessed Tomorrow Climate Ambassadors. They seek opportunities to speak to congregations and groups about 1) the impacts of climate change on health, livelihoods and communities, and 2) faith-based responses that will help protect the health and wellbeing of families and communities now, and ensure a prosperous, just, and secure future.

Blessed Tomorrow is “a coalition of diverse religious partners united as faithful stewards of God's creation," and is a program of ecoAmerica, “which builds institutional leadership, public support and political will for climate solutions int he United States.” The PC(USA) is a partner organization.

For more information contact the church office: 973-743-1796 or email RuthBoling@aol.com.

Leadership

Regarding Ruling Elders:
Congregational Nominating Committees

The PC(USA) Book of Order calls for ruling elders to “exercise leadership, government, spiritual discernment, and discipline and have responsibilities for the life of a congregation as well as the whole church ...” (G-2.0301). As ruling elders are called to ordered ministry for life, it is important to approach the work of nominations to this role with humility, open hearts, and open minds. The congregational nominating committee has the responsibility to provide for the leadership of both the local congregation and the larger church through its councils. [Read More]
