Northeast Region Annual Meeting
National Presbyterian Black Caucus

The annual meeting of the Northeast Region of the National Presbyterian Black Caucus is Friday, August 9, 3pm, through Saturday, August 10, 3pm, at Roseville Presbyterian Church, 36 Roseville Ave, Newark NJ 07107.

The Rev. Dr. Diane Moffett, President/Executive Director of the Presbyterian Mission Agency, will be the guest speaker on Friday the 9th at 7:15pm. The Rev. Dr. Moffett was also previously at Elmwood Presbyterian Church, so we are delighted to welcome her back to Newark Presbytery. All are invited to participate!

Musings of a Wandering Presbyterian
Storytelling Part 2

Death is inevitable…and, death is beautiful. One of the most unexpected challenges for me this year has revolved around death. I have always had a complicated relationship and history with death, and had not planned on having it dug up and expanded upon this year. This year I have witnessed a few members of my community at Brooks-Howell pass away, and it has been tough at times. I will not stand here and pretend that all of them have hit me to the core, but some have been harder to process than others. What I can say for certain, is that each of their deaths have affected me in some way or another, and, if I am being honest with myself, I am grateful for the experience to share in a small part of their journey. Ordering PC(USA) Planning Calendars and Books of Order

If you are not already receiving a 2019-2020 PC(USA) Planning Calendar from the PC(USA) store, and would like to purchase one through the Presbytery, we will be ordering some. Please fill out the order form on our publications page. The calendars will be available at the end of August, or beginning of September, so the September 14 presbytery meeting is a great time to plan to pay and/or pick up your copies! The calendars will be $8.50 each, and we are requesting that you pay for your calendars before you pick them up or we ship them to you.

If you will not be at the September presbytery meeting, please send your payment to the office. If you would like your calendar(s) to be shipped, please include shipping in the check. (Shipping costs are approximately $2.50/calendar or $7.25 for 3 calendars.)

Puerto Rico Travel Study Seminar

The Presbyterian Peacemaking Program is offering a study travel seminar to Puerto Rico November 11-18, 2019. The theme is: In the Aftermath of Maria – The Political, Social and Racial Dynamics Revealed by the Hurricane and How the Church Is Responding to Them.

This is a great opportunity whether you are going on our Puerto Rico mission trip in a couple weeks, or are not, but want to learn more about our neighbors and the ways that Hurricane Maria has brought their struggles to light.

Join Learn & Discern Fall 2019!

Accompaniment begins with a long weekend of training and discernment in the U.S. Presbyterian Peace Fellowship Learn & Discern take place twice a year, and it’s never too early to sign up!

The next Learn & Discern weekend will take place October 11-14 2019, in Montreat, NC.

About Learn & Discern events:
At this three-day gathering, people who are interested in accompaniment gather to train in non-violence and anti-racism, engage with accompaniment principles, learn about the contexts in which we have been invited to practice accompaniment, and spend time in discernment and reflection.

Come to the Table 2019

The third installment of the Synod of the Northeast's Come to the Table event is scheduled for November 8-9, 2019 at the Stony Point Center in Stony Point, NY. The planning team is hard at work designing the experience focused on worship, joint learning – with a mission fair, and two 1½-hour-long workshop sessions on three tracks – and fellowship. The theme around which our Synod community will gather is For Such a Time as This: Change, Crisis, & Opportunity.

World Mission staff has created a variety of online resources to equip Presbyterians to prepare for, engage in and reflect on God’s mission.

Three mission toolkits — Christian Muslim Relations, HIV/AIDS and Short-Term Mission Trips — are currently available online and a Mission Committee Toolkit should be online sometime this fall.

How Traumatic Was a Trip to the Moon?

I’m thinking about trauma today. Pastors are entrusted with stories of trauma from parishioners, strangers, and colleagues. Domestic abuse. Combat. Incest. Terrorism. Fire.

Pastors (and educators, social workers, police officers, and medical professionals) hear a lot of difficult stories – at least if we are authentically open to hearing them.  And I don’t know if incidents of trauma are on the rise in the world or it’s just that people are more open to talking about their trauma, but all clergy – and anyone in people professions – need training in ACEs and in Trauma Informed Care.

Can you imagine how traumatic it was to fly to, land on, and return from the moon? [Read More]
