The Body of Christ

1 Corinthians 12:12 The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ.

I loved coaching basketball.  From my own experience of playing on a team I knew that when I was pushed to my limit I went further than I thought possible.  I applied this to my coaching as well.  Many of the incoming freshmen were told horror stories about how difficult tryouts would be.  Year in and year out, I saw my student athletes accomplish goals they never thought possible.

Coaching provided a hands-on method of teaching leadership, cooperation and responsibility.  My athletes knew that if they didn’t do their part in conditioning that it affected the entire team.  My point guard realized that if he didn’t pass we wouldn’t win.  My center realized that if he didn’t rebound we couldn’t be successful.  It was an amazingly practical method of uniting together to achieve a common purpose, and when we did it correctly, we all succeeded.  Every year that I coached I shared Paul’s discourse to the Corinthians about the body of Christ.

1 Corinthians 12:12 The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ.

Coaching and being a part of a body of faith are very similar.  We have all seen situations in which the body failed because one part acted on its own.  We have also seen success when the body of Christ recognizes the common goal and the fact that there is no part that is not important.  Similar to the windsprints, push-ups, sit-ups, free throws and countless drills that a coach puts his players through, we must also take part in spiritual disciplines realizing that if we do not do our part, it affects everyone.  We must realize that if we do not have a common goal, we miss the point and we are less effective.

Let us then hold each other accountable.  Let’s do our part!  Let’s put in the time conditioning our souls.  Let us put aside the foolish squabbles and arguments that only hinder the going forth of the gospel and let us focus on the prize for which Christ has called us heavenward.  I’ll see you on the court!

"As a young adult, being part of the first youth sabbath in our conference was a true blessing. Seeing the youth enjoy the outreach was inspiring. Not only did we spread the love of Jesus to our brothers and sisters, it also helped unify the bond among the youth in our conference.

With Gods’ help we’re planning to continue every year with this event. And if your a young adult in the Kentucky-Tennessee conference we really look forward to seeing you being a part of the next youth sabbath.

ACF INSTITUTE

ACFI IN Berkley, CA

Is this thing on

This week has been a blessing as student leaders, pastors, chaplains and Conference/Union directors gather to discuss plans and sharpen their ministry skills. An interesting addition to this year’s Adventist Christian Fellowship Institute (ACFI) was the live transmission of “Is This Thing On.” It is an unedited conversation between the North American Division administration and student leaders attending Public Universities. Many questions were directed in regards to funding for Public Campus Ministries, realizing that a vast majority of Adventist youth attend Public universities mainly for reasons of finances and degree selection. Elder Dan Jackson (President) as well as the G. Alexander Briant (Executive Secretary) and Randy Robertson (Treasurer)  gave their total support to the students' points and promised their full commitment, keeping in mind that Adventist education is one of the foundations of the Adventist Church.
