Strong Laser Light Does Not Affect Cod Heart Rate or Behaviour

UTOFIA is a Horizon 2020 project that aims to develop an underwater camera for turbid environments. It uses a "pulsed laser light source" in addition to a very precise camera in order to capture clearer images than has been possible before.

Researchers at DTU Aqua and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences wanted to investigate whether the use of high-powered lasers might have a negative effect on marine organisms. As a model species the researchers used Atlantic cod which they placed in a tank with the UTOFIA system, grids and GoPro cameras.

To monitor the cod's stress responses, 10 free-swimming cod were tagged with Star-Oddi's DST milli-HRT heart rate loggers. GoPro cameras were the used to assess the activity of 28 cod. The cod was exposed to the laser for 10 minutes during 5 days.

The experiment revealed that the laser had no effect on the cod's heart rate and neither did it alter the cod's usual behaviour.

Fun Fact: A Christmas Full of Vitamin C

Well into the 20th century, fruits such as apples and oranges were only available in Iceland during the Christmas season. Candy and sweets weren't readily availabe either so getting an apple at Christmas was a big treat for many Icelandic children.

Nowadays most fruit can be bought all year round, but one fruit is still synonymous with Icelandic Christmas, the mandarin. This is because the season coincides with the first crop of mandarins from Spain where most of the fruit is imported. It is estimated that each Icelander eats about 25 to 30 mandarins over the Christmas period.

Data Storage Tags-DSTs

Star-Oddi has been manufacturing and developing DSTs since 1993. The data loggers are used for various animal research studies. You can find our whole product range here. The following sensors are available:
