Get Rid of Junk Mail Forever

Your postal box, email box, and voicemal box are filled with unsolicited junk. Request for donations, offers to sell or upgrade your home, and pre-approvals for new credit cards come in regularly. And let’s not even talk about the confusing information from Medicare and Medicare Advantage Plans! Handling the flood of incoming junk mail can be overwhelming and exhausting. For those vulnerable to scams, this nuisance can be dangerous.

Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to get rid of junk mail.

Investing a small amount of time and energy to stop the junk mail from its source will pay off in big ways. Taking some easy steps will  minimize your mailbox clutter and your frustration. It will also reduce your vulnerability to fraud and identity theft.

Here are the most effective ways of ending your junk mail:

  1. Register with the DMA Choice Program through the Data & Marketing Association (DMA). You can register at DMA's consumer website: for a processing fee of $2 for a period of ten years.
  2. Tell the four major credit reporting agencies (e.g., Equifax, Innovis, TransUnion, and Experian) to stop sending credit card offers.
  3. Opt out of the coupon mailers with just a few clicks. You can tell Valpak, RedPlum (or RetailMeNot), and other mailers to stop sending you coupons.
  4. Contact each organization that sends you junk mail. This is the most time-consuming step, but it may be worth the effort. To begin, collect all unwanted mailings for 4-5 weeks. Then during business hours start calling or writing to each organization, telling them you wish to opt out from receiving future mail. Some organizations even have a spot on their website to opt out of future mail.
  5. Use an app to help you unsubscribe from junk. Paper Karma attempts to contact each organization on your behalf.

You CAN end junk mail! Making these steps not only reduces the waste and confusion for seniors, it also helps protect them from scams, fraud, and theft.

Blue was the color originally associated with St. Patrick, but green is now favored.
