We are continuing to condense these email updates weekly. Construction for the project is currently 20% complete. By request we’ve added sidewalk/crosswalk and pedestrian detours to the email update. In the interest of streamlining our email updates for readers we’ll be sending a survey in the next couple of weeks. Use the links below to skip to the sections you care about:
Expect night and weekend work to continue in Downtown and Capitol Hill over the next few weeks.
 
Crews for Madison BRT are working hard to make progress on construction as safely and efficiently as possible. Typical work hours are between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. The contractor has obtained a noise variance to complete construction activities within allowable noise limits for work outside these hours.

Upcoming work highlights:
  • Weekend of June 17 - 19:
    • Watermain installation on Saturday, June 18, on E Madison between Broadway and 11th Avenue*
    • 2nd Avenue from E Madison St to Marion - closed
    • Driveway closures and night work on Spring between 2nd and 3rd avenues
  • Weekend of June 24 - 26:
    • Driveway closures and night work on Spring between 5th and 6th avenues
  • During the week of June 20 and June 27:
    • Crews will remove the staging area on E Pike St in preparation for Pride celebrations during the week of June 20. We will return to the area for staging as early as August.
    • Nightwork on East Madison between Broadway to 11th Avenue on June 22*
    • Union closed between 12 and 13th Avenues – closed starting the week of June 27
    • Paving in the following locations:
      • On the southside of Spring between 3rd and 6th avenues
      • On the southside of Madison St between 7th and Boren
    • Sidewalk installation at the following locations
      • On the southside of Madison St between 2nd and 3rd avenues
      • On the northside of Madison between 5th and 6th avenues
      • On the southside of Spring St between 7th and 9th avenues
    • Watermain installation on E Madison between Broadway/11th and Denny Way/23rd Avenue*

Work areas: 
Detours and lane reductions:
To make space for construction and to keep people traveling safe, our contractor regularly installs short- and long-term detours.
Sidewalk/crosswalk closures and pedestrian detours:
  • On Madison/E Madison St:
    • Southeast corner of 1st and Madison
    • On the southside between 2nd and 3rd avenues
    • On the northside between 5th and 6th avenues starting as early as June 20
    • Between Broadway and 11th – daily closures on the north and south side.
      • Please follow detour signs around the work areas.
    • On the southside between 24th and Thomas
  • On Spring St:
    • Southside between 2nd and 3rd avenues
    • On the southside between 7th and 8th avenues
  • On the northside Union St between 12th and 13th
  • On the westside of 13th between Union and Madison
  • At Broadway Court, 10th Avenue and 11th Avenue – closure starting the week of June 27
    • We will only close sidewalks one at a time.
  • On the southside of Terry between Madison and Marion
    • Pedestrians will only be able to cross east/west starting the week of June 27
    • North/south crossings will be closed on Terry – to cross north/south please use 9th and Boren Avenues
  • At Denny Way
    • North/south crossings on the east and west side – closed starting as early as June 20
      • Only one crossing will be closed at a time. Please cross Madison as needed when traveling east/west.
Road closure and detour:
  • Full closure on Union St between 12th and 13th starting the week of July 27
    • Eastbound Detour will be Madison to right on 14th
    • Westbound 14th – left on Madison
  • Full closure on the southside of Terry between Madison and Marion starting as early the June 21
    • Drivers will be detoured to Boren or 9th Avenue to Marion
Traffic reduced to one lane at:
  • Madison/E Madison St:
    • Between 1st and 4th avenues
    • Between 7th and 9th avenues
    • Between Broadway and 13th Ave
    • Between E Denny Way and 23rd Ave
    • Between 24th and Thomas
  • On Spring St:
    • Between 1st and 6th avenues
    • Between 7th and 8th avenues – private development may close a lane as early as June 20
King County Metro bus stop closures or relocations
As construction activities continue, bus stops on the project corridor will temporarily close or relocate as needed. Please visit King County Metro’s Transit Alerts page to learn more about these closures or relocations.

Downtown: Street and sidewalk paving continue
  • Weekend work June 17 - 19:
    • Paving on 2nd Ave on the South side of Madison – Madison will be open; 2nd Avenue closed
      • Crews will work at night on June 17 to prepare for paving
    • Driveway paving on the south side of Spring between 2nd and 3rd avenues
  • Weekend of June 24 – 26:
    • Driveway paving and night work on Spring between 5th and 6th avenues
  • During the week of June 20 and 27:
    • On Madison St:
      • Sidewalk demo on the southeast corner of 1st Avenue and Madison
      • Sidewalk work on the south side of Madison between 2nd and 4th avenues
      • Sidewalk and bus stop installation on the north side of Madison between 5th and 6th avenues
    • On Spring St:
      • Paving on the south side of Spring St between 3rd and 6th avenues
First Hill: Paving on Madison St and sidewalk work on Spring St continue
  • During the week of June 20 and 27:
    • On E Madison St:
      • Roadway demo and paving on the south side of Madison between 7th to Boren avenues
        • Expect weekday closures on Terry Avenue between Marion and Madison
      • Pole removals between 6th Ave and Broadway
      • Pole foundation installation between east of 12th Avenue
    • On Spring St:
      • Sidewalk work on the south side of Spring between 7th and 8th avenues
      • Private development construction between 7th and 8th avenues
    • On Terry Ave:
      • Full closure on the southside of Terry between Madison and Marion starting as early the June 21
        • Drivers will be detoured to Boren or 9th Avenue to Marion
        • Pedestrians will only be able to cross east/west starting the week of June 27
        • North/south crossings will be closed on Terry – to cross north/south please use 9th and Boren Avenues
Capitol Hill: Watermain installation continues in multiple locations; expect night and weekend work and service interruptions
  • Weekend work June 17 - 19:  
    • Watermain installation on Saturday, June 18, on E Madison between Broadway and 11th Avenue*
  • During the week of June 20 and 27:
    • On E Madison St:
      • Watermain installation on E Madison between Broadway and 11th Avenue*
        • Nightwork scheduled for June 22 to make service connections*
      • Watermain installation between Denny Way and 23rd Avenue
      • Watermain installation between Union Street and Madison the week of June 27
      • Temporary signal installation at E Madison St and 11th Avenue
    • On E Union St:
      • Inlet installation between 12th and 13th avenues
      • Crews will install a duct bank between 12th and 13th Avenues
    • On E Pike St:
      • Crews will remove the staging area in preparation for Pride celebrations
      • We will return to the area as early as August
* Nearby residents and businesses may experience a temporary water outage as part of the watermain installation between Denny and 23rd Avenue. For questions about water outages, visit  SPU’s water outage map or call SPU’s 24/7 Operations Response Center at 206-386-1800.
Madison Valley: Watermain installation continues on Madison St 
  • During the week of June 20 and June 27:
    • On E Madison St:
      • Watermain installation on E Madison St between 24th Avenue and Thomas expected to finish towards the end of June
    • PSE will be doing work at 27th and Madison starting June 20th
    • Crews will progress west as work continues
    • Nearby residents may experience water outages* during the day in the following areas.
      • On 25th Ave between E Denny Way and E Roy St starting June 29
      • On 26th Ave between E Denny Way and E Thomas St starting June 30
      • On E Thomas St between 26th and 27th Avenues starting June 30
