We are continuing to condense these email updates to include only the most relevant information. We are working closely with residents and businesses to address impacts that may affect them.

Work continues to ramp up throughout the project corridor. Pay close attention for pedestrians, construction crews, equipment, and detour signage. 

Thanks to everyone for being mindful of our nighttime road closure on E Madison St this past Wednesday. Crews installed the first portion of a watermain in the intersection of 20th Avenue and E Madison St. We plan to return to this same intersection on May 15 to finish the work. We will fully close the roadway again at night.

Work areas: 

Detours and lane reductions:
To make space for construction and to keep people traveling safe, our contractor regularly installs short- and long-term detours. The below list reflects planned detours for next week. We may need to make adjustments as work progresses based on site conditions and safety needs. 

Eastbound/Westbound Detours:
  • Traveling east (towards Madison Valley):
    • E Madison St closed between 12th and 13th avenues - Please follow signs to Union St, turn left at 13th Ave, and right to return to E Madison St
  • Traveling west (towards Downtown):
    • E Madison St closed between 12th and 13th avenues - Please follow signs to turn right at 15th Ave, left on E John St, left on 12th Ave, and right to return to E Madison.

Capitol Hill detour at Madison St and 12th Ave

Traffic reduced to one lane at:
  • E Madison St between 1st and 4th avenues
  • Spring St between 1st and 3rd avenues
  • Spring St between 7th and 9th avenues
  • E Madison St between Broadway and 13th Ave
  • E Madison St between 18th and 20th avenues
  • E Madison St between 24th and 25th avenues
Upcoming construction activities
Downtown: Street and sidewalk paving continue, including the following activities:
  • Weekend work May 6 – 8:
    • Intersection demo and paving on the northwest corner of Spring St and 3rd Ave
  • During the week of May 9:
    • Sidewalk installation on:
      • Spring between 2nd and 3rd avenues
      • 1st Avenue between E Madison and Spring streets on the west side
    • Roadway demo, repairs, and paving on the south side of Madison between 1st and 3rd avenues
  • Weekend work May 13 – 15*:
    • Paving in front of driveways on the south side of Spring St between 1st and 3rd avenues
  • During the week of May 16:
    • Sidewalk installation on continues (see above details)
    • Roadway demo, repairs and paving extend east on Madison up to 4th avenue
* The team plans to close the driveways and alleys from 7 PM Friday to 6 AM Monday.
First Hill: King County Metro to removing trolley power lines; demo/paving on Spring St between 7th and 9th avenues
  • During the week of May 9 & 16:
    • Demo/paving to on Spring St between 7th and 9th avenues
  • Weekend work in May:
    • King County Metro will remove existing trolley power lines on Madison St between 6th Ave and Broadway.
      • Drivers can expect temporary lane shifts/closures and intermittent delays while equipment is repositioned
Capitol Hill: Water/storm pipe installation continues; Full road closure on Madison between 19th and 22nd avenues planned for May 15: 
  • During the week of May 9:
    • Storm drain installation on Madison St between 12th and 13th avenues
    • Watermain work on Madison between 19th and 20th avenues
      • Nearby residents and businesses may experience temporary water outages May 12 – 14**
    • Pole foundation installation on Madison between Broadway and 13th
  • Weekend work May 13 – 15:
    • Roadway paving within the current closure on Pine St between 15th and 16th avenues east
    • Full closure on Madison St planned for the evening of May 15 between 19th and 22nd avenues east in coordination with Seattle Public Utilities
      • Nearby residents and businesses may experience a temporary overnight water outage as part of this work**
      • The road will close beginning at 7 p.m. and will reopen as early as 6 a.m.
  • During the week of May 16:
    • Watermain installation between 19th and 20th continues
    • Watermain installation on Madison St between Broadway and 11th Avenue starts
