We are continuing to condense these email updates weekly. Construction for the project is currently 30% complete. By request we’ve added sidewalk/crosswalk and pedestrian detours to the email update. In the interest of streamlining our email updates for readers we’ll be sending a survey in the next couple of weeks. Use the links below to skip to the sections you care about:
Paving continues in Downtown and First Hill. Watermain installation is ongoing in Capitol Hill and Madison Valley.
 
Crews for Madison BRT are working hard to make progress on construction as safely and efficiently as possible. Typical work hours are between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. The contractor has obtained a noise variance to complete construction activities within allowable noise limits for work outside these hours.

Upcoming work highlights:
  • Weekend of June 24 - 26:
    • Driveway closures and night work on Spring St between 5th and 6th Avenues
    • Waterline work between E Denny Way and 23rd Ave
  • During the week of June 27 and July 4:
    • Union closed between 12th and 13th Avenues starting the week of June 27
    • Terry closed to north/south traffic at Madison St
    • Paving in the following locations:
      • On the southside of Spring between 3rd and 6th Avenues
      • On the southside of Madison St between 7th and Boren Avenues
    • Sidewalk installation at the following locations:
      • On the southside of Madison St between 2nd and 3rd Avenues
      • On the northside of Madison between 5th and 6th Avenues
      • On the southside of Spring St between 2nd and 3rd Avenues
      • On the southside of Spring St between 7th and 9th Avenues
    • Watermain installation on E Madison between Broadway/11th, Denny Way/23rd Avenue, and 24th/25th - expect some service interruptions and nightwork:
      • Day time service interruption on 25th Ave between E Denny Way and E Roy St - July 8*
      • Day time service interruption on 26th Ave between E Denny Way and E Thomas St - July 10*
      • Day time service interruption on E Thomas St between 26th and 27th Avenues - July 10*
  • No weekend work July 1 - 4

Work areas: 
Detours and lane reductions:
To make space for construction and to keep people traveling safe, our contractor regularly installs short- and long-term detours.
Sidewalk/crosswalk closures and pedestrian detours:
  • On Madison/E Madison St:
    • Southeast corner of 1st and Madison
    • On the southside between 2nd and 3rd Avenues
    • On the northside between 5th and 6th Avenues
    • Between Broadway and 11th – daily closures on the north and south side.
      • Please follow detour signs around the work areas.
    • On the southside between 24th and 25th Avenues
  • On Spring St:
    • Southside between 2nd and 3rd Avenues
    • On the southside between 7th and 8th Avenues
  • On the northside Union St between 12th and 13th Avenues
  • On the westside of 13th Ave between Union and Madison
  • At Broadway Court, 10th Ave and 11th Ave Between Madison and E Union Streets
    • We will only close sidewalks one at a time.
  • On the southside of Terry between Madison and Marion Streets (see map above):
    • Pedestrians will only be able to cross east/west
    • North/south crossings will be closed on Terry – to cross north/south please use 9th and Boren Avenues
  • At Denny Way:
    • North/south crossings on the east and west side
      • Only one crossing will be closed at a time. Please cross Madison as needed when traveling east/west.
Traffic reduced to one lane at:
  • Madison/E Madison St:
    • Between 1st and 4th Avenues
    • Between 7th and Boren Avenues
    • Between Broadway and 13th Ave
    • Between 20th and 23rd Avenues
    • Between 24th and Thomas
  • On Spring St:
    • Between 1st and 6th avenues
    • Between 7th and 8th avenues – private development may close a lane as early as June 20
King County Metro bus stop closures or relocations
As construction activities continue, bus stops on the project corridor will temporarily close or relocate as needed. Please visit King County Metro’s Transit Alerts page to learn more about these closures or relocations.
Upcoming construction activities
Downtown: Street and sidewalk paving continue
  • Weekend of June 24 – 26:
    • Driveway paving and night work on Spring between 5th and 6th Avenues
  • During the week of June 27 and July 4:
    • On Madison St:
      • Sidewalk demo on the southeast corner of 1st Avenue and Madison
      • Sidewalk work on the south side of Madison between 2nd and 3th Avenues
      • Sidewalk and bus stop installation on the north side of Madison between 5th and 6th Avenues
    • On Spring St:
      • Crews wrap up sidewalk installation on the south side between 2nd and 3rd Avenues
      • Paving and electrical adjustments on the south side of Spring St between 3rd and 6th Avenues
  • During the weekend of July 8 - 10:
    • Crosswalk work on the North and South Crossings of Spring Street at 3rd Avenue
      • Spring and 3rd will be accessible
      • Pedestrians will be detoured around the work area
    • Paving on the northwest corner of Madison St and 6th Avenue
First Hill: Paving on Madison St and sidewalk work on Spring St continue
  • During the week of June 27 and July 4:
    • On E Madison St:
      • Roadway demo and paving on the south side of Madison between 7th to Boren Avenues continues
        • Roadway demo and paving will progress east to Boren and Summit as early as the weekend of July 9
      • Pole removals between 6th Ave and Broadway
    • On Spring St:
      • Sidewalk demo and installation on the south side of Spring between 7th and 8th Avenues
      • Private development construction between 7th and 8th Avenues
    • On Terry Ave:
      • Full closure on the southside of Terry between Madison and Marion
        • Drivers will be detoured to Boren or 9th Avenue via Marion
        • Pedestrians will only be able to cross east/west starting the week of June 27
        • North/south crossings will be closed on Terry – to cross north/south please use 9th and Boren Avenues
Capitol Hill: Watermain installation continues in multiple locations; expect night and weekend work and service interruptions
  • During the week of June 27 and July 4:
    • On E Madison St:
      • Watermain installation at the following locations*
        • Between Broadway and 11th Avenue
        • Between Union Street and Madison
      • Temporary signal installation at E Madison St and 11th Avenue
      • Pole foundation installation east of 12th Avenue
    • On E Union St:
      • Inlet and duct bank installation between 12th and 13th Avenues
      • Watermain installation from Union to Madison
      • Roadway demo expected to begin the week of July 4
* Nearby residents and businesses may experience a temporary water outage as part of the watermain installation between Denny and 23rd Avenue. For questions about water outages, visit  SPU’s water outage map or call SPU’s 24/7 Operations Response Center at 206-386-1800.
Madison Valley: Watermain installation continues on Madison St 
  • During the week of June 27 and July 4:
    • On E Madison St:
      • Nearby residents may experience water outages* during the day in the following areas during watermain installation between E Denny Way and Thomas St:
        • On 25th Ave between E Denny Way and E Roy St starting July 8
        • On 26th Ave between E Denny Way and E Thomas St starting July 10
        • On E Thomas St between 26th and 27th Avenues starting July 10
    • Watermain installation on E Madison St between 24th Avenue and Thomas
    • PSE is doing work at 27th - crews will progress west as work continues
