We are continuing to condense these email updates to include only the most relevant information. Construction for the project is currently 20% complete.  We are working closely with residents and businesses to address impacts that may affect them. Use the links below to skip to the sections you care about:
Upcoming weekend and night work on Madison throughout the project corridor. Expect closures, vehicle/pedestrian detours and bus reroutes.  
 
Crews for Madison BRT are working hard to make progress on construction as safely and efficiently as possible. 
 
Typical work hours are between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. For work that involves pouring concrete, the contractor has obtained a noise variance to begin as early as 6 a.m. to give concrete more time to dry.

Upcoming work highlights: 
  • May 20 – 23*: Spring Street between 7th and 9th Avenues - Weekend work  
  • May 25: Madison between 19th and 22nd Avenues - Full closures starting at 7 p.m. to continue water main installation in coordination with Seattle Public Utilities. 
  • May 23 – 27:  
    • Spring and 8th Avenue intersection - partially closed for electrical work. 
    • Madison between 12th – 13th avenues and on Pine St between 15th and 16th avenues - Closures lifted
  • June 1– June 3: Spring and 8th Avenue intersection - fully closed for paving. 
  • June 3 – 6*:  
    • Madison and 2nd Avenue intersection - fully closed for paving.  
    • Madison between 1st and 2nd avenues - Weekend work 
    • Spring St between 2nd and 3rd avenues - Nighttime work and daytime paving.  
 
*This work will include access impacts to businesses and residences in the work zone. We are communicating directly with property owners and managers to provide notice and minimize impacts wherever feasible. 

 
Work areas: 
Detours and lane reductions:
To make space for construction and to keep people traveling safe, our contractor regularly installs short- and long-term detours. The below list reflects planned detours for next week. We may need to make adjustments as work progresses based on site conditions and safety needs. 

Eastbound/Westbound Detours: 
  • Traveling east (towards Madison Valley): 
    • E Madison St closed between 12th and 13th avenues - Please follow signs to Union St, turn left at 13th Ave, and right to return to E Madison St
    • On Sunday, May 15, E Madison will be closed at 19th Avenue – Please follow signs left on 19th Avenue E, right on E John Street and then left to return to E Madison St
    • On Tuesday, May 24, 8th Avenue closed between Spring St and E Madison St– Please follow signs left on Spring St, turn right onto 9th Ave to get to E Madison St. Local access only between Madison ST and Spring St with access from Madison St.
  • Traveling west (towards Downtown): 
    • On Sunday, May 15, E Madison will be closed at 22nd Avenue – Please follow signs left on 23rd Avenue, right on E Union Street, right at 19th Ave and then left to return to E Madison St
Traffic reduced to one lane at: 
  •  E Madison St between 1st and 4th avenues
  • Spring St between 1st and 3rd avenues
  • Spring St between 7th and 9th avenues
  • E Madison St between Broadway and 13th Ave
  • E Madison St between 18th and 20th avenues
  • E Madison St between 24th and 25th avenues
Upcoming construction activities
Downtown: Street and sidewalk paving continue, including the following activities:
  • During the week of May 23:  
    • Sidewalk installation continues on:  
      • Spring between 2nd and 3rd avenues  
      • Madison between 2nd and 3rd avenues  
      • 1st Ave between E Madison and Spring streets  
    • Roadway paving on Madison between 2nd and 3rd avenues  
    • Roadway demo and paving on Madison between 1st and 2nd avenues 
    • Electrical work on Spring St between 3rd and 6th avenues  
  • During the week of May 31:  
    • Roadway demo and paving on the intersection of 1st and 2nd avenues of E Madison St  
    • Sidewalk installation continues on Madison between 2nd and 3rd avenues
First Hill: King County Metro to removing trolley power lines; demo/paving on Spring St between 7th and 9th avenues
  • Weekend work May 20 – 22*: 
    • King County Metro will remove existing trolley power lines on Madison St between 5th Ave and Broadway. 
      • Drivers can expect temporary lane shifts/closures and intermittent delays while equipment is repositioned
  • During the week of May 23:  
    • Conduit installation on the intersection of Spring St and 8th Ave
    • Pole foundation installation on Madison between 9th and Boylston avenues
  • During the week of May 31:
    • Pole foundation installation continues on 9th to Boylstone avenues
    • Roadway demo and paving on Spring St from 7th to 9th avenues
  • Weekend work on June 3 – 6 
    • Intersection paving at Spring and 8th avenue 
* The team plans to close the driveways and alleys from 7 PM Friday to 6 AM Monday.
Capitol Hill: Watermain and detention pipe installation continues; 2nd road closure on Madison between 19th and 22nd avenues continues: 
  • During the week of May 23*:  
    • Full Closure on E Madison St between 19th and 20th avenues on May 25
    • Storm drain installation wraps up Madison St between 12th and 13th avenues
      • In the coming months we will return to this area to complete watermain installation
    • Watermain installation at:  
      • E Madison St between Broadway St and 11th Ave 
      • E Madison St between 19th and 20th avenues 
      • E Madison St between 20th and 23rd avenues
    • Electrical work happening on Madison between Broadway St and 10th Ave
    • Inlet work at select locations
  • During the week of May 31:  
    • Electrical work continues between Broadway St and 10th Ave
    • Inlet work at select locations

Madison Valley: Watermain installation continues on Madison St 
  • During the week of May 23:  
    • Watermain installation on E Madison St between 24th and 25th avenues
  • During the week of May 31:
    • Watermain installation and testing on E Madison St between 24th and 25th avenues
King County Metro bus stop closures or relocations
