Astronaut takes Wilderness Award, Laketrails experiences to International Space Station

When Army Col. Mark Vande Hei travels to the International Space Station (ISS) in March 2017, he will bring with him a Laketrails Wilderness Award patch…but that’s not all. He says all that he learned as a Laketrails camper 32 years ago will also go with him into space. Read the full story in the Blog on the Laketrails website.

News from the Island: 'I get to see the spark in their eyes'

Program Director Krista Goodman talks about the first half of the summer, the trips campers have experienced, a sighting of Fr. Bill's turtle at Blueberry Inlet, and all that Laketrails has meant to her.

Help support the well project at Laketrails

In the middle of the wilderness that is Laketrails there is a room full of science behind the nondescript doors of the pump house.

Long gone are the days when one could
safely scoop a cup of water directly from the lake and drink it. Since 1997, Laketrails has had an impressive system of filters, pumps and tanks that purify water for drinking, laundry and cooking. Maintenance and upgrades have been made over the years, however the system has now reached the end of its life expectancy. The best long-term solution to providing potable water for the island is to dig a well.

The Minnesota Department of Health has awarded Laketrails a $10,000 grant to use toward a well project, however we need to raise $15,000 to cover the remaining cost. The drilling company has already visited the island to begin assessments. They will return later this summer to complete plans and begin the work. We need to proceed in order to use the MDH grant by the 2017 deadline.

Seen around town
If you happen to be in Doug's Supermarket in downtown Warroad, don't forget to look up. Thanks to the handiwork of Janae Krantz-Odendahl, a nicely painted Laketrails canoe is hanging from the rafters! Thank you, Janae, and a big thank you to Doug's Supermarket for helping us promote Laketrails.

Back in the day...a blast from the '80s

We had it all going on -- bad perms, mullets, short shorts, and Magnum P.I. mustaches -- and they all showed up at Laketrails. Take a look at these choice photographs, circa 1980-something, and see if you recognize anyone (perhaps yourself?).
