2018 Learning Matters Newsletter

Learning Matters Newsletter January 2018

Happy New Year to you all. I hope you have had a lovely summer and managed to absorb some of that amazing vitamin D that we have had so much of. Our team have all had a fantastic break in various parts of the country and overseas. Personally, I managed to achieve my no devices for 8 days challenge as well as getting out regularly on my paddleboard and giving yoga a go. Big tick on the health and wellbeing front. Yah! We hope you too are feeling refreshed and ready to take on the exciting times and challenges ahead in 2018.

We begin the year with some really exciting news. We have been approved by the New Zealand Education Council as a registered institution to renew teacher registrations. We are the ONLY learning support provider in the country with this status and are obviously incredibly proud of this achievement. Unlike other learning support providers, our teachers are registered teachers who undergo a rigorous professional development and appraisal system annually. We believe this is important to ensure we are both credible and providing the best evidence based support possible, as well as growing on a professional front.

Term Dates for 2018

Below are our Semester Dates for 2018. In line with our learning from the International Dyslexia Conference we have made the decision to operate for 44 weeks of the year. Our semester dates are slightly different and longer than your child’s mainstream school. We are excited about the benefits this will bring to all the children we work with. They will not be at risk of declining progress during school holidays. This enables us to provide more regular support, and to ensure we can make the greatest impact possible, as we all know time is precious and the sooner, and more consistently we intervene, the better. Please note these dates apply to in school sessions also, which will be held in the local centre when school is closed.

2018 Semester dates are as follows:

Semester 1 Tuesday 30th January - Friday 20th April - 12 weeks

Semester 2 Monday 30th April - Friday 13th July - 11 weeks

Semester 3 Monday 23rd July - Friday 5th October - 11 weeks

Semester 4 Monday 15th October - Friday 21st December - 10 weeks

Upcoming Learning Matters Professional Learning Retreat

Next week we are all heading to Whangamata to spend two days immersed in business updates and professional learning. Our team of 17 will be together for the first time ever. Our focus for professional learning includes:

  • Working Memory and Executive Function and how this impacts our learners

  • Magical Morphology (building comprehension through word parts)

  • Multisensory Mathematics

  • Phonological Awareness in a play based setting

  • Decodable texts and the link to the Reading Pyramid

We will also be participating in a Health and Wellness session.

I look forward to sharing some of the highlights of this great event with you all in the near future.

2018 Workshop Schedule

This year we have an action packed workshop schedule. There is something for everyone. Please be sure to share this with your child’s classroom teacher who may be interested in attending one of our workshops. The sooner schools plan for professional learning sessions, the more likely they are to be able to make them fit within their budget constraints. Here is a link to workshop registrations and further information. So help us to help you by getting this out there!
