Purchase Tickets to Masquerade

From the review by Mariam Koslay,
Goulburn Post 15 February 2018:

“British writer Horace Walpole one wrote ‘the world is a tragedy to those who feel, but a comedy to those who think’.
‘Masquerade’, by Australian playwright Kate Mulvany – adapted from Kit Williams’ children’s book, published in 1979 – scrutinises this relationship and the balance between the two.
Mother Tessa (Erin Williams) is grappling with the fact her 10-year-old son Joe (Wade Pik) has cancer. Her unwavering support is challenged by the impatient and confused boy confined to a room.
This white room becomes the backdrop to a more colourful story, a love as equal to that of a mother and her son, a love the audience learns is shared between The Sun (Ethan Betts) and The Moon (Anne Watterston).
The audience hops between the two narratives as the fictional and real world meshes into one outlandish, humorous, touching tale shared among mortals and characters of fiction.
Jack Hare (Blake Selmes) is entrusted with a riddle and an amulet by his mistress The Moon, to deliver to The Sun – an act of love the comical and easy going hare struggles to understand.
Joe’s medical condition pales against the laughter and fun injected by characters such as Penny Pockets (Amelia Whalley-Routley), Tara Tree-Tops (Anne Waterson), Dawn (Marianne Powles) the Practical Man (Steve Whalley-Routley) and the Man Who Plays The Music That Makes The World Go Round (Andy Picker).
The return of these side characters is highly anticipated, and the music is cleverly-established by musical director Marianne Powles.
The cast and crew, led by director ChrisJohn Hancock are seamless, what would appear disjointed on paper flourishes on stage.
Beyond the message of love, companionship, loyalty and innocence there is a realisation : tragedy and comedy do not need to be divorced at all times, but can come together to provide timely growth when it’s least expected.”

124th Annual General Meeting of the Goulburn Liedertafel Inc.

Shine For Kids

You might remember our season of "Comin' Home Soon" by Alana Valentine in 2013.

Created from interviews with indigenous inmates in Goulburn, Junee, and Silverwater Prisons, and children from Shine For Kids, The show was a very moving account of the challenges facing families who are separated and confronted by the prison system.

Shine for Kids is currently the only non-for-profit national organisation that solely supports the children and families of people involved in the criminal justice system. We are seeking volunteers in both our programs, but especially in our Education program. We are hoping to be able to have volunteers who reside in Goulburn to support the local children requiring our service to ensure it stays as community-based and local as possible.

Locally we offer the following programs:

Education Program
Our Education Program runs in primary schools. In this program volunteers are paired with a child requiring our services for weekly one hour sessions. The time and day of this session is negotiated by the volunteer and the school to ensure it is most suitable for all parties.
In the session the volunteer assists the child in their reading, writing, mathematical skills, or any other areas they may require assistance in. Volunteers also provide emotional support in a time that can be very difficult for children. We are seeking volunteers who would be able to commit to these weekly sessions to ensure consistency and stability for these children.
We have a number of children in Goulburn requiring volunteers for anyone who is interested. Following induction days volunteers are able to start immediately.

Prison In-Visits Program
Visits at the Goulburn Correctional Centre happen every Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 2pm. Our volunteers go in from 9:30-12:00, and then 12:30-2:00. There are three areas in the Centre: Maximum Security, Protections, and Minimum Security. Once in there, children can play games, colour in, and do craft activities under the guidance of our volunteers in a safe and stress-free environment.
Volunteers will  never be left unattended and are always able to request to not go into certain areas for visitations as we understand that volunteering within a correctional centre can be a very foreign thing for many people. Volunteers do not need to commit themselves to every single weekend. Following approval from the Correctional Centre and all appropriate training, volunteers can come on-board.
I would really like to bring attention to the point that we are seeking volunteers of any age or gender, and volunteers do not require any formal experience in working with children or in schools.
It’s great experience for all those working in child care as it provides a different environment in which one works with children.
All we require from our volunteers is a Police Check, Working With Children’s Check, and commitment to our children.

We will provide all required training for our volunteers at Induction Days and we are always present to support our volunteers however they require.
