The Lieder‘s first major show for 2018 is a new Australian play, Masquerade, written by Kate Mulvany and based on the 1970's picture book by Kit Williams, with original music composed by Mikelangelo and Pip Branson.
Masquerade is a magical fantasy suitable for all the family, opening on Valentine’s Day and running for three weeks until 3 March. Evening performances commence at 7.30pm on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and the matinees will be on Sunday 25 February at 4pm and Saturday 3 March at 2pm.
Masquerade has an all-local cast playing wonderful live music and creating a world of fantastical characters who tell a story of love using songs, riddles and hidden treasures.
Our hero is the bumbling Jack Hare, played by Blake Selmes, who is on a race against time to deliver a message of love from the Moon to the Sun. Far, far away in a world just like ours, a mother cheers her son Joe, with the tale of Jack Hare’s adventure. But when Jack’s mission goes topsy-turvy, Joe and his mum must come to the rescue.

The Lieder cast features young Wade Pik and Erin Williams as the 10 year old boy and his mum, supported by an extraordinary band of multi-talented performers including Blake Selmes, Marianne Powles, Amelia Whalley-Routley, Anne Watterston, Ethan Betts, Steve Routley, and Andy Picker.

A most beautiful amulet modelled on the original gold amulet that was buried as part of the international treasure hunt, has been specially created by local jeweller Bill Dorman.
At all Masquerade performances the audience will have the opportunity to search for their own treasure and solve the riddles that will help Jack Hare reach his goal. Solve the riddles, search for lost treasure, and find the secret hare to win some fun prizes!

Getting to Know You

Marianne Powles
Get to know Marianne Powles, musical director and cast member in our upcoming production of Masquerade.

Your age, hometown, and occupation?
I'm 47 years old, originally from Sydney, and a teacher.

How long have you been involved with the Lieder Theatre?
My first show was Shoehorn Sonata in 2010. It was a beautiful play starring Kathy Campbell and Doreen Mullen about women in a prisoner of war camp who started a choir.

Chrisjohn asked for my help, and I put together a choir for the show. After that I was hooked! I had been a big fan of the theatre since arriving in the area in 2003 and I was so excited to be involved.

What's your favourite Lieder production?
Every Lieder production I have seen or worked on has had something special about it, but as an audience member I was profoundly moved by Comin' Home Soon and The Laramie Project. A Streetcar Named Desire was phenomenal and Calendar Girls made me laugh a lot. As a performer, my favourite project is absolutely Masquerade. This is an exquisite piece; the performances are already remarkable, and I just love having the opportunity to make music and act in the same show.

Favourite memorable Lieder moment?
I think my favourite Lieder memory will always be rehearsing Pippin. The show we had talked about doing for so long came to life and I was able to work on it with my whole family and so many new friends. Also there was lots of fire, and I'm a bit of a pyromaniac!

What does the Lieder Theatre Company mean to you?
I think the Lieder is an extraordinary, magical place. I still remember walking in for the first time and being captivated by (and jealous of the performers in) Blithe Spirit. The Lieder has given me the opportunity to collaborate with wonderful, creative people to make music for theatre and musical theatre, as well as to try 'straight' acting for the first time in my life, a long held dream. Even more importantly the Lieder has embraced my children and introduced them to the wonders of theatre. If it takes a village to raise a child, I will always be grateful mine are growing up in the Lieder village.

What plays would you most like to see on the Lieder stage?
I would love to see Hay Fever or any other Noel Coward play on our stage. The Lieder is made for it!
The Importance of Being Ernest, The Rivals, and Travelling North are all shows I would love to see the Company perform. One day I would like to be involved in a production of Brecht's Threepenny Opera at the Lieder.

Do you have a dream part you'd like to play?
When I was young I always played over the top middle aged women. I wouldn't mind having another go now! I'd love to be Lady Bracknell or Mrs Malaprop or Juliet's nurse perhaps...

What do you do when you're not at the Lieder Theatre?
Mostly I think about being at the Lieder!
