The Reduced Shakespeare Company

The Lieder Theatre Company, disguised as the Reduced Shakespeare Company (RSC), will be presenting The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) at the Goulburn Club in Market Street from 11-28th April.

This will be the third year the Lieder has partnered with the historic Goulburn Club to present an exciting program of Shakespeare. The Goulburn Club will be hosting the opening night on 11th April with a light supper and special treats for first night patrons.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare is a speedy romp through all of Shakespeare’s 37 plays, performed in just ninety minutes. The play is presented with comic mayhem and cheeky re-inventions of some of the Bard’s most memorable speeches, all performed by only three actors at break-neck speed.

The Complete Works was created by three young Americans to perform at the Edinburgh Festival in the late 1980s, and since then the show has toured the world and evolved to suit each new venue. “The show will fit beautifully into the classic environment of the Goulburn Club and as usual we recommend that our patrons take note of the weather and dress accordingly. The Club and the Lieder staff will look after audience comfort and enjoyment” said Chrisjohn, the show’s director. ”We love performing at the Goulburn Club and The Complete Works is perfect raunchy pub theatre especially suitable for an irreverent frolic around the Bard’s famous plays, characters and speeches”.

The costumes have been created, assembled and chosen by Pauline J Mullen and welcome newcomer to the theatre, Helena Bozzetto.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare will be performed by seasoned Lieder comedians Blake Selmes, Ryan Paranthoiene and Martin Sanders, frantically supported by Ben Pik and Michelle and Harrison Treble behind the scenes.

Festival in Paradise

Fourteen Lieder-ites have purchased their   airline tickets and are   preparing to attend   The Festival in Paradise in Venice, Florida in   June.
This amazing international theatre festival is   staged once every four years and hosted by   the American Association of Community   Theatre.
The Lieder Theatre will be the only company   from Australia performing there. It is a great   honour to have been invited for the third time to this prestigious event.
Preparations include the creation of a new play called Monochrome and rehearsals for a spectacular Fire Show.
Stay tuned for you chance to see these special shows before the cast and crew jets off to the United States!
More information about the festival is available online:

Poland Project

Preparations are also underway to host Teatr Brama - a theatre company from Poland in October.
This gathering will feature workshops and talks from the visitors about their work in Europe where they create theatre which aims to empower people to use art to improve their lives and their world.
Anyone interested in assisting with the organisation and running of this exciting gathering please contact Chrisjohn at the theatre.
Goodnight Irene

Goodnight Irene is a new play written by local journalist, David Cole who has been working on his script for the last few years.  The play will be presented in a short season at the Lieder in June. Goodnight Irene is a gentle story told by four performers in one act about aging and its impact on family and friends.

The National Youth Circus Festival called CATAPULT has finally returned to Bathurst this year. Catapult celebrates young talent and aspiring circus artists during Youth Week in April.

Five Lieder circus enthusiasts have been passionately raising funds and rehearsing for their presentation at the festival. Jack Bell, Britt Lewis, Rangii Paerau, Ethan Betts and Andrew Rayner will be performing their own fire show as part of the Festivals’ finale on Saturday 21st April.

Congratulations to all the amazing cast and crew of Masquerade for their wonderful performances in February.
A great effort and fantastic performances by everyone. The well-received production was topped off by the attendance on the final night by one of the original composers of the show Mikelangelo.
Thank you so much everyone  for your dedication and commitment that created a very special and memorable show (especially Wade!).

From the President
What a wonderful introduction Masquerade was to the Lieder new year: one of those brilliant stories that makes you laugh and sob simultaneously.
Now we look forward to the next production but at The Goulburn Club – The Complete Works of Shakespeare Abridged will highlight our close partnership with The Club.
New Year also means our AGM, and the 124th one was held on 25 March (I know we turned 125 in 2016 but there were a few missed AGMs during the world wars). The 2017 committee of David Rayner, Scott Treble, Jock McLean, Muffy Hedges, Christine Bentley, David Cole and myself was nominated and re-elected as there were no other nominees. It is a bit late for this year, but I would ask members to consider nominating for the Lieder committee – or more formally the Lieder Theatre Company Board of Management – in 2019 as everything can benefit from fresh faces and new blood.
If you are reading this report, you will know how good the Lieder shows always are. Please help us make sure that everyone knows that and finds a time in their frantic lives to see at least one of our productions a year.  We have noticed a decline in audience numbers over the past few years, and no one wants that to continue.
Your local theatre company is a bit like your brain – if you don’t use it you lose it, and we don’t want that, do we?
I look forward to seeing you at The Goulburn Club for the Lieder’s The Complete Works of Shakespeare Abridged.
