On the weekend of 19-21 October Goulburn’s Lieder Theatre is hosting a visit from the Polish Theatre company Teatr Brama in a celebration of community arts and theatre called Periphery.
Teatr Brama from Goleniow, Poland are expert practitioners of Social Community Theatre. They challenge the relationship between audience and theatre, utilising performance to create a participatory meeting, not a spectator activity.
As part of this celebration of international artistic collaboration, the two companies will create brand new theatre during the week prior to the festival. Teatr Brama will incorporate local performers into their production Ghost Dance Impressions and Lieder Theatre performers will revive their award-winning production Monochrome which received acclaim at the American Association of Community Theatre’s WorldFest in June this year. Finally, the two companies are already preparing – separately and through the wonders of technology – a completely new collaborative work to be performed on the Sunday evening.
In a weekend of workshops, discussions and networking, Periphery will examine theatre as a tool for social change. There will be keynote presentations from Chrisjohn Hancock, Artistic Director of the Lieder Theatre and Daniel Jacewicz, founder of the Teatr Brama, panel discussions and presentations from community arts leaders, masterclasses, and a special opportunity for anyone to make a 3 minute ‘pitch’ – the arts equivalent of the open mic. The festival will include pop-up performances from Lieder Youth and the company’s celebrated Acrobatic Fire Show.
