From the National Office

Dear masters swimmer,

It's been another busy month for most of you with swimming, events and activities!

This month the National Office is excited to launch our MSA official member portal, available to all 2021 financial MSA members. This exclusive member area brings directly to our members specialised programs, health and nutrition editorial, member offers, webinars and personal development for our coaches.

Register your details HERE for access to the member portal and complete our quick survey to go into the chance to win one (1) of three (3) Polar Verity Sense devices; which are a great tool to help you track your swimming km’s.

We look forward to receiving your feedback and will work to create an ongoing valuable library for our members.

Also, in this month’s newsletter:

  • National Committee update
  • National Board update
  • Member Portal Launch
  • Insurance

Our sincere recognition to our members, coaches, volunteers, branches, management committees and the NBM, we couldn’t have made it this far without your continued support and hard work.  And a special thankyou to Kath Davis (MSA Administrator) and Mark Hepple who have been dedicated and very patient to the process of delivering the Member Area to you all.

The MSA National Office

The sub-committee met 11 February at 7:30pm and discussed ways to enable clubs to encourage membership recruitment. Insurance used for trialling non-members; social media training to boost online presence and prospective members; membership in a box; technology to support the Million Metres program and the concept of members bringing ‘just one more’ to squads. Many great ideas, so watch this space.

The NCC is working to migrate the Online Coaching Course across to the Dita platform. There are currently many trainees across Australia in the pipeline undertaking the course. The NCC expects they will be testing the new platform later in March.

The NSMC is currently planning the delivery of the Mental Health Month May for 2021. They are narrowing down the list of Mental Health Organisations that fit with MSA and are focused on the benefits of swimming and belonging to a masters community that impact members (and non-members) mental health.

The NTC will meet in March to discuss the focus for 2021. The NTC will review the opportunity to deliver technical education courses online.

Jodie Quinn accepted the invitation from the Board (NBM Meeting 17 February) to fill the current vacancy on the National Board of Management, until the April AGM when her role as Board Director becomes effective 21 days after the AGM. Great to have you on Board Jodie.

The National Office is excited to launch this month, the official MSA member portal. We started working on the member portal in the Victorian lockdown and we are thrilled to bring directly to our members specialised programs, health and nutrition editorial, member offers (including our major sponsor Vorgee) and personal development for our coaches.

Be sure to register your details HERE for access to the member portal and complete our quick survey to go into the chance to win one (1) of three (3) Polar Verity Sense devices; which are a great tool to help you track your swimming km’s.
Insurance Corner

Here we will bring you information and clarification to assist with understanding all those tricky Insurance Questions. This month we bring you:
Did you know that as an affiliated Masters Swimming club you are able to organise open Water Swims and be covered by the National Insurance Program?

Marsh, our insurance broker, has provided the following guidelines for clubs who would like to consider an Open Water event. Open Water swims are one of those higher risk activities that need to be risk managed well. The below points will provide the guidance and security to a club that insurance cover is in place should a claim occur.

Open Water Swim Events:
The insurance policy will provide coverage on the following basis:

  • The event must be a Masters sanctioned event
  • All activities must take place within 2,500m of the shore
  • Qualified lifeguards must be on duty at all times whilst participants are swimming in the open water event; and
  • A safety boat must attend at all times whilst participants are swimming in the open water event.

Open Water Training:
We understand that many clubs also want to conduct open water training available for members, the insurance will provide cover for this also on the following basis:

  • All activities must take place within 100m of the shore
  • Members must swim in a group of two or more
  • Ideally at a patrolled beach with a coach present, but it is understood this is not always possible so this will not affect the cover if not in place.

We hope this helps in your understanding of the national Insurance Program cover for OWS – for more details contact Marsh at: or 1300 130 373

It is great to see so many members and clubs back in the water: training, competing and most importantly having fun and keeping fit. Once again the National Office have been keeping a close eye on Club and Branch social media pages and enjoy sharing some of the great stories with you all. If your club has some stories/events to share please email
Let's check in with who featured in this months email header:

A great story from Cerbus Classic Swim about our 91yr old Dorothy Dickey who was the oldest entry to complete the Monjon Cerberus 1.2km OWS held on 20 Feb 2021. She did this despite leaving her goggles in the car at the finish line and having to borrow a pair at the last minute; enough to throw any seasoned swimmer off their game! Dot, as she is known to her friends, defies age by training 4 times a week with the Doncaster Dolphins where she started swimming competitively at the age of 56yrs.
Congratulations to Peter Tucker who recently was awarded Life Membership of the Hobart Dolphins Masters Swimming Club. Peter's contribution to the club over the past 23 years has been instrumental in making them the successful club they are today. It is members like Peter that are integral to our sport. Great work!
And over in the west check out some of the very happy faces at the Newman Churchlands Live_Lighter Club Challenge 21 Feb 2021. It was a very successful meet and there are some great images to checkout on their facebook pages. It is great to see so many Club events taking place.
Congratulations to Darwin Stingers Robert Magin receives a special board celebrating his 4th Endurance 1000 Competition award for top point score of the year at the Stingers monthly general meeting. Is great to see members enjoying all the different types of swimming programs available.
It was a great morning swim in the river for the Mildura Murray Masters Club who swam from the rowers to the bridge and back - all 1500m aprox. And they were accompanied by hot air balloons - a lovely part of the world. Put this on your bucket list when they next hold their carnival.
North Mackay Masters held another fantastic SC with a record 60 plus registrations with over 50+ on the day. Plenty of PB's to keep everyone's attention and also the joy of watching a lone swimmer battle through a 200m fly event. A single Branch (Qld) record fell on the day with a great 200m back by Tracy Clarkson from Brisbane Northside 3:29.37 eclipsing the 2007 record by some 16 seconds. The weather held enough to allow a great day of competition and friendship.
And last but not least - lets celebrate the Myall Masters Carnival 2021.Following two cancellations last year they got lucky. Not with the weather, but no one seemed to notice the rain too much as they all were enjoying having all their swimming friends back together again. Perseverance and passion certainly pays off!
